a King Size bed

We have never had a King size bed. We started with a Double (ahhh, young love!) and then upgraded to a Queen when we moved to Dallas. Then, once a year (no kidding) for 14 years, I would walk into the master bedroom with tape measure in hand and try to make the measurements for a king size bed fit. They never did. And I'd give up the dream until another year had passed and I'd think... well maybe this time it will be different, and do the drill all over again.... Either I'm tenacious, or just not very smart!! In all honesty a King would have fit, but it would have totally messed up my scale and proportion in the bedroom, and I'm all about scale and proportion!

So, I am very happy to say that now after twenty years of marriage we will finally have a King size bed! (Hey, it's the little things in life!!) When we bought the house our now master bedroom was actually the master bathroom (no shower), a closet and a bedroom. To get from the master bedroom to the master bath you had to walk through the master closet! We moved the master bathroom into the new ell and the master closet adjacent to it, which is actually the upstairs of the barn. The master bedroom then became one large, lovely, dreamy (can you tell I'm excited?!) bedroom. The room measures approximately 14 x 30. We are adding french doors which lead to the porch (it was a single door before) and we are adding a gas fireplace. It has always been a dream to have a fireplace in my master bedroom, and in New Hampshire you really want a fireplace in the bedroom!

I would love to hear if you love your mattress (or hate it!) and what brand you have. I'm overwhelmed with so many decisions, so any advice on beds would be greatly appreciated!

This is the master looking South. There are two entrances into the master now; the opened door on the right is one. In the middle of the room, on the floor, you will see the hole where the original chimney was removed allowing us to enlarge the room. There will be a sitting area in this end of the room.

This is the master facing North. The opened door on the left is the second entrance. The closed door leads to the master bath in the new ell. The large framed opening on the right will be the new french doors which open onto the upstairs porch. The french doors look out over the east meadow. The new gas fireplace will be to the right of the french door opening, the fireplace bump-out has not been framed in yet.

The new King bed will be on the expanse of wall on the left facing the french door opening

Looking into the new ell master bath from the master bedroom. The original cast iron tub sits in front of a pair of windows looking over the east meadow.

The single window to the left of the tub windows is the W.C. Wall to be built!

View facing northeast from the tub window!

View facing southeast from the tub window!

View opposite the tub. On the left, perpendicular to the windows will be the double sink vanity. The framing 0n the right is the neo-angle shower.

The framing on the left is the master shower. The framing on the right is a closet for the stacking washer and dryer. Through the center opening is the new master closet which is actually in the original barn!

Framers laying the floor for the master closet and storage room.

  1. Have recently found your wonderful blog! Thanks for writing about your vision and showing us your progress. Spring in NH is sure to be a joy for you. Question: Who is the manufacturer of your lovely (new) windows? Oh, um, our mattress is so old I'm no help there . . .

  2. joan, the progress looks amazing. re: mattresses, I did a lot of research and we finally settled on a Royal Pedic. They are not inexpensive, but very well (hand)made and without all the toxic chemicals that are in standard mattresses which was something important to us. (to justify the price I just kept dividing-- by year, months, nights, hours(!) we'd spend on it!!) I'll email you some info on them. That said, we tried it out in the store, but I haven't slept on it yet!

Dear husband and I are solidly queen bed people. We laugh that we lose one another in a king size bed! :) But yours sounds like a dream come true.

I LOVE the view from your windows. ahhhhhh

  3. Your new bedroom will be wonderful! Lucas really wants a king size bed, but our room is WAY to small for it! He doesn't get it... he say's, "I know it will fit in here". yeah, it will fit but it would take up the WHOLE room! lol

  5. Everything looks fabulous! And you know how envious I am about this entire project! I know how difficult this process is, but also such a great "high"! When I come see you this summer, may I have my own bootle of wine, bubbles, and view in your bathtub?
No help on your king-size bed wish. You remember Bob and I slept on a double and loved every minute of it. I do know that they are more difficult to make-up. Actually, now that I think of it, go ahead and get one, and give me your linen sheets that I have coveted forever. Love You, Sister.

  6. Our windows are Lepage, a Canadian company. Our GC told us they are similar to Marvin's top of the line, only less expensive. They are all wood, two over two true divided light, but since I really haven't opened and closed them yet I'm just hoping we love them! The kitchen windows are all casement and the bathroom has casement and double hung (it's a long story!!) They are also making our french doors for the master bedroom and the kitchen.

Julia- Thank you so much for sending the bedding info- it was a real eye opener.

Jenny- That's too funny about Lucas! Such a man thing!!

Mary- You mean it will be OVER one day??? Promise?!!!! Hard to believe at this point...

Patti- Thank you for your sweet comment. Yes, you may have your very own bottle (served on the coveted hotel silver tray!), bubbles and tub! Oh and the much coveted linen sheets will be on the guest bed!! I had forgotten you and Bob always had the double bed... love you too!

Thank you all for your comments! j.

  7. Have recently found your blog and am enjoying it very much. I love what you are doing to the house and love NH. I have a Tempur-pedic bed and love it for sleeping. It took a week or so to get used to it,but miss it so much when I travel. Partners don't feel when the other person gets out of bed so that is nice. Some people don't like it for love making though, because...ahem it doesn't have bounce to it. When you purchase the mattress you have several months to return it if you don't like it.

  8. Hi Joan - I'm visiting via another Aussie Vicki Archer's blog. Bravo to you both for your courageous & exciting move! We did the same (although stayed in the same State) 3 yrs. ago & it's been a liberating & joyous experience - although we are renovating big time as well.

We've always had a King size bed & just love it! One caveat is to be very careful when buying sheet sets. We have a pillow-top, so when you add the mattress underlay & sheepskin electric blanket, you really need to measure the depth & take these with you when shopping. I've found you need to buy extra-deep fitted sheets or life becomes very challenging when it comes to the once-a-week linen change! Looking forward to visiting you again.

  9. Kathy, Welcome & thanks so for your comment! And thanks for the info on the Tempur-pedic bed... "all" the info!!!;)

Hi Millie! Welcome! It's fun to know that you've made the same kind of move! Thanks for the valuable info on the sheets! I loved your comment about the sheepskin electric blanket- I have never heard of that before, but is "perfectly" Aussie, and sounds dreamy!!

  10. We have a Tempurpedic and I love it but my husband does not. He thinks it is too hard. It really bothers his back. We have had it for 10 years and it is still in great shape. I do think though that next time around we will get something different since he has endured this one for me for so long.

I LOVE having a King bed...it is what we have always had even as newlyweds in a cottage. I love having my space when sleeping. Congrats on yours!

  11. Kingsdown mattresses are simply the best. We have two king sized: one for eleven years and another for four years.

  12. I encourage you to consider a mattress that you can flip - the mattress industry has put so many products on the market that have a foam top or a feather bed top, which are comfortable to start, but the down side is that you cannot flip your mattress. Rotate, yes, but flip, no. After much research and testing, we settled on the Lady Englander line - they are not cheap but they will last you two and three times longer than any other out there. good luck!
