Please help these dogs...

...plus a whole van full of others!

When we moved to New Hampshire we were shocked and surprised to learn that most of the animal shelters here are empty of stray or abandoned dogs. After asking questions and investigating we learned that this was due to New Hampshire's strict spay and neuter laws. While this is true, I think it has more to do with what is acceptable, and in this part of the country it is simply not acceptable to dump a dog, or let your dog run amuck and have liter after liter of puppies. We have lived here for almost two years now, and while we live in a very rural area we have never seen a single stray dog. What we do see is car after car with a dog or two, or three inside.... this is one dog loving state!

We found sweet Ella at the Dallas SPCA which, as of today, has 12 pages of adoptable dogs..... We once thought we would have to drive back to Dallas to get Ella a "sister," but we recently became aware of a shelter in Alabama with an amazing group of volunteers who drive vans of dogs from over-populated shelters in the South all the way to New Hampshire (and Maine) to find their forever homes! The Shelby Humane Society is a shelter who partners with humane societies across the country that are in need of animals to adopt. It's a win/win situation. I am so very awe-struck by the kind hearted individuals who take days out of their busy lives to drive these lucky, lucky dogs states away to find people who will love them. I think they are angels...

Jenifer Wallis & Jenny Miller are two of the angels that will embark on such a trip this Saturday, November 7th... Please click on their blog and read how these two adorable Alabama girls are going to rescue a van full of dogs and bring them to New Hampshire!
Please, please if you can- donate money to this very worthy cause, even $5 will add up and help these shelter dogs! (If you are another blogger please feel free to copy this post and spread the word!) There are three easy ways to donate on the site....

Stay tuned to their blog as they will also do posts along their journey!

Godspeed Jennifer & Jenny and the puppy-angels in your care.

  5. Great post! There are so many great animals at shelters. And anyone who has adopted an animal knows what an amazing feeling it is to save a life.

  6. Joan, What a wonderful heart warming post. It's always so nice to hear about angels in action! The puppy angels, yourself included, are absolutely amazing! Now I'll say a little prayer that all those sweet homeless dogs find homes as special and as loving as yours. Hugs for sweet, adorable Ella. xoTrina

  7. Joan,
We participated a couple of weeks ago in a transport for an Anatolian shepherd dog. If anyone has an opportunity to help a rescue transport a dog, I heartily recommend it. It always seems that dogs are going from south to north.

  8. You too? I've got a house full of rescues.

I did a spot on HGTV several years ago about designing your landscape for dogs. They still air it occasionally because I get emails each time. It resonates.

So glad I clicked on your blog because of its topic then discovering I like it all!

    Thank you for your post.

  9. What a great post. All states should be so concerned about the welfare of dogs and cats alike. These girls are angels. I am going to see if I can donate a little something to help out.

  11. Joan, What a great post! I am going to take your suggestion and copy over to mine. I think I will start with a picture of Buddy, my best little pal, who wandered into my life late one night at a convenience store!

  12. Joan, thank you so very much for all of your incredible support. When we next do the trip, we will be certain to leave later so we don't arrive at 4am and we can meet you afterwards. Take care and enjoy your beautiful home and family (including Ella, of course).

  13. FYI, there are rescue drivers all over the country, relaying dogs from north to south. If you want to join us, so some searching on Yahoo Groups for "rescue transport" or "animal transport". Many groups even include a highway that they operate on. So, for example, if you life near I-95, you can get involved with relays up and down that highway. Each driver only takes about an hour or two of the trip, so you can wind up with 20+ drivers shuttling dogs from the deep south up to the north!

Here in Virginia, we are a big "crossroads" for these dogs and it was very easy for me to get involved.

You'd be surprised by how many transports are out there every Saturday and Sunday...dozens!

Here's a story about my local group of drivers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8nhdHCkzCA

  14. I live in east Tn where the spay/neuter is frowned upon by so many "country people." We were shocked at how many animals were dropped off at our farm the first year.
Then our shelter began "Rolling Rescue" and free vouchers for spay/neuter. Baby steps, but it's working!
We moved here with one dog and 4 cats. We now have 3 dogs, and 18 cats, and 5 horses. Gulp.
Good thing we do not have 2-legged children!

  15. what a group of angels! so heartwarming.

my mom rescued her dog from a puppy mill in Kentucky, and Lucy, a bijan frisee, has happily kept my mom and stepdad company and given them much joy in the years since then! I remember my mom saying, "I had to get here out of There!"

  16. Hi Joan,
There's a foundation here in S. FL that takes animals to Salem NH, to their shelter there.
Darbster Foundation uses profits from their vegan restaurant, dog day care & bike businesses to get homes for animals from the very high "euthanasia" shelters in Palm Beach County!
