please leave your calling card...

I think Christmas is the perfect time to tell you thank you.

I want you to know how very grateful I am that you visit us, and that you are interested in the happenings at the farmhouse.
Your presence here is a gift, and for that...

 I thank you.

It is that time of year again when I bring out the antique brass "Christmas" tray and place it on the living room coffee table.  The tray would have been originally silver-plate, but when we found it many years ago only hints of silver remained.

It is engraved:

MA
from
Mary and Nannie
Christmas
1881

As I wrote last year...
Over the years I have spent hours wondering who was MA?, who were Mary and Nannie?, what was their Christmas like the year this beautiful tray was given as a gift?, where did they live?, and on and on... .
Just as I wonder about these three people whose names are engraved on an antique tray that has a presence in my home, I also wonder about you, who also have a presence here.
Some of you I know, as you leave me dear comments or send me emails.... but others of you remain a mystery. On my site meter I get visits from places that are near and dear to us, and places that are far away and magical. Dan and I always talk about and wonder who all of you are!

Last year I mentioned a regular visitor from a tiny town in Oregon.  It is the small town where Dan's father (who died when Dan was two) is buried.  I wrote that we would love to know who that person was.
Several days after Christmas, I received an email from this woman.  I cried as I read it to Dan.  She lives within walking distance of the cemetery where Dan's father is buried.  Her son learned to ride his bike there; she and her husband often take walks there.  To know that someone across the country just happened to find my blog, and now visits our home, and to know that that person lives so close to Dan's father's resting place, and that this all happened because we share a love of houses is a sweet and dear connection that makes the world seem that much smaller.
You just never know the connections that we all have to one another... .

Last year one of the things that surprised me the most when I did this calling card post was that so many of you commented that you were surprised that I wanted to know about you!  I was shocked!  Of course I want to know about you!!  You are our guest and I want to know all about you... who you are, where you are, what makes you return to visit!  Anything and everything you wish to share.  You might share something that resonates with another reader, and thus another connection is made.

As was the custom in the period of this Victorian tray, people would leave their printed "calling cards" in trays at the homes they visited.
(click here to see images of Victorian calling cards)
On the tray is a collection of antique tortoiseshell and sterling calling card holders.

Dan and I are hoping that in the spirit of the holidays that you, too, will drop your "calling card" in the tray and let us know that you stopped by to visit!  We would love to hear from each and every one of you- those who regularly visit and leave comments, and those of you who usually come and go quietly!!

We are honored to have you all here, and we thank you for stopping by today!

Wishing you the Happiest of Holidays!
dan, joan and ella

  2. Merry Christmas! I'm one of your compulsive blog clickers! Whenever I hit a snag in the day, I click over to my favorite blogs (and there aren't many) to see if there's some new wonderful story to escape to.
More than loving the photos of your exquisite home, I love the story of you and Dan. I love how your partnership shines through each post.
I live in California, and lead a pretty modest life. Your stories make me want to run out and go antiquing and they also make me want to get rid of the things in my home that don't have a story. (Though, actually, most things do, as I've inherited wonderful things throughout the years.
Thanks for sharing your life, your story.
    All the best.

  3. I'm an Arizona grammy of 12 who is a new follower of your beautiful blog. Thanks for the inspiration. Just last month I found my own silver engraved tray from a thrift shop that I love - mine is just from 1953 from the Great Neck B'nai B'rith to their past president. Wishing you a joy-filled Christmas.

  4. Hello! I'm Spring and, like you, we moved up north from Dallas only we're on the opposite side of the country in Washington state just east of Seattle

I found your blog quite randomly and have checked it almost daily ever since. I enjoy your writing and the pictures and the progress of your beloved home.

I hope you have a very merry Christmas.

  5. I comment and email occasionally. You are one of my favorite 25 blogs and I plan to do a blog post on you within the next couple of months. Who needs magazines such as Country Living and Southern Living when there are such great blogs to read daily such as yours?

  7. My name is Gerry and I live in a very small town in southwest Missouri. I love reading blogs and enjoying all the beautiful homes and decorating ideas, although I don't have a blog myself. I really don't know how I found yours, more than likely browsing one of the many I read, it probably caught my eye and I clicked on it and was hooked. Your home is absolutely beautiful and such an inspiration to me. Thank you so much for sharing.

  8. Beautiful, beautiful tray Joan and a lovely story. Hi, I'm A-M, from Australia. I have been following you from day dot and your blog is one of my most favourite blogs in the whole blogosphere. Big statement. But true. Your house is my dream and I secretly wish for a doggie just like Ella. She has such love in her eyes. Happy Christmas sweet Joan. A-M xx

  9. Hello, I am from Cheney, Wa. Cheney is in Eastern Wa, near Spokane. My husband and I lived in Massachusetts for 3 years so I understand your love of New England. We are true westerners at heart though so we moved back home and have been here since. I remember driving by the beautiful houses in New England like yours and wondering what they looked like inside. I can see now through your charming blog. Thank you and merry Christmas.

  10. Hello,
I just found your blog and am really enjoying the pictures. We recently moved into an older 1960s home, in middle TN, and are renovating it, so even though the styles are vastly different I love reading about how you've changed something old into a thing of beauty again.
    Merry Christmas!

  16. Oh, you remind me, we have a copper tray from Tiffanys that I found years ago in a little dusty antique store and it cost pennies !!
You can barely see the engraving, too faint and worn away to read anymore.

Dear Joan, Wishing you a fabulous holiday season, to your husband and sweet Ella too.
I hope in the not too distant future, we can meet ..

I started following decorating bloggers a little over a year ago but your home feels like "home". The name of your blog resonated with me. I live in suburb of Chicago...wish you could give my home some "love". I live with my husband and youngest of 3 kids as the other two have graduated college and starting their own lives. Cheers!

  19. Merry Christmas and may your new year be blessed! Thank you for writing about your lovely home. The attention to detail, the stories each thing tells, well it is all rather magical to me. I read and reread each post, and study each photo. I still say you need to write a book! I'd buy the first copy! Thanks for leaving a comment at my neglected blog. Who knows, maybe this will be the year I'll take time to figure the whole blogging thing out. Thanks for giving me such inspiring things to look at!

  20. Merry Christmas Joan! I live in a 1919 house and we have been restoring it slowly over the last 11 years. We have left
our "calling card" behind the mantle we had built. The cabinet maker was happy to be part of the fun (a letter and the invoice for someone to find someday)! Ruth (you know Ruth) and our other sister and three brothers all live in Connecticut. We are part of three generations of die hard New Englanders...our family came from Ireland and settled in CT. and Mass. and have never left...what better place to celebrate Christmas! Enjoy!

  24. Hello Joan, Dan, and Ella. After reading all these lovely comments, I've been tempted to just slip away quietly as I usually do. I'm that person who's content to sit at the edge of any gathering, watching and listening to everyone else talk! My name is Lee; I'm a native Californian living in Saco, Maine. I will be retiring and moving back to California soon, and have been looking for design ideas for the small cottage I'll be living in on my sister's property. I found my way to your blog from An Urban Cottage, though I can't remember how I found that one. I'm just glad I did. Your taste and style are exquisite and I look forward to every new post - and to rereading the old ones. I've visited so often that I feel like I've been to your home and think of you as friends! Thank you for encouraging us to leave our calling cards. I'm very pleased to have "met" you at last. Blessings to you all for a wonderful Christmas season.

  25. Merry Christmas Sweet Joan!!!!
I really feel like we're old friends and I get so excited when I click on your blog and you have a new post. (of course, your blog is at the top of my "favorites bar.") I was getting worried about you when you hadn't posted in a couple of weeks. I hope everything is okay and you were getting your decorating and Xmas shopping done.
I'm second grade teacher born and raised in California. (About 30 minutes from San Francisco) I have two boys, a husband that keeps me laughing, a dog, two cats and 9 chickens. (My husband loves animals and fixing up our Cape Cod style house.) It was a pit when we bought it and he saw the potential. After 21 years of marriage, I can now say I love antiquing and working on our house too.
This is only my second time leaving you a comment, but please know that you and your blog bring a smile to my face and a warm place in my heart. And if you are ever in the San Francisco area, I would love to meet you in person.
I hope you and Dan have a wonderful holiday season! (& Ella too)

Your home is beautiful, your writing is lovely - both exude so much warmth. But I especially appreciate your sharing of your process and details of your rooms. It inspires me to look for the perfect thing - and not settle for less!

And thanks for encouraging commenting. I’m a quiet visitor and forget sometimes that blogs are about sharing.

  33. How lovely... I just discovered this blog today... what a treasure.

I live on the NH border in Massachusetts in an early 1700's cape. I had to smile when I saw your post about how you came to move to NH. My husband and I were lured by Antique Homes Magazine, too. We ended up falling in love with the oldest house in a town we had never heard of (despite being Mass. natives).

The realtor breathed a sigh of relief as she showed us the property. We couldn't contain ourselves. We exclaimed over each and every original feature -- wide board floors, gunstock corners, exposed beams, fireplace with soapstone hearth and a beehive oven. We barely commented on the lack of heat in one section of the house, dated bathroom and kitchen, peeling paint, and cracked plaster. Apparently, we were the first buyers the realtor brought through the house who weren't scared away. As she told us, "It's not everyone's cup of tea."

We've been stewards of this home for 16 years now. During that time we've undertaken our share of house projects (although no where near the extent of your efforts), dealt with the noise, dust, and chaos of renovation, cleared brush, planted perennials, lived through the great ice storm, blizzards, power outages, downed trees, snow-collapsed barn, etc. etc.

It was the best move we ever made and we still love our drafty old house (but maybe not as drafty this winter thanks to some recently installed windows). :-)

    Thanks for extending the welcome.

    Happy holidays,
    Mary

p.s. Is there a post on the installation of your whole-house generator? That's a project on our wishlist!

  36. Isn't it wonderful to realize how many of us are touched by the "love of a house"? Your efforts both in creation and sharing of have inspired many myself included. Homes can have great influence on our lives and the lives of those we come in contact with. I believe few activities in life can offer the pure joy of making a house a home.
Each story and post is a lovely gift
    truly appreciated.

  44. A happy Solstice and a very merry Christmas to you Joan, Dan, and Ella. :) My name is Maria and I live in Randolph, NH which is about 3 hours north of you. We are getting some lovely snow right now and I hope you are to! I discovered your blog a few months ago and immediately went back and read every post in the archives. Your blog has in turn filled me with wonder, anger, and wonder again. It is hard to stay sour when you do things with such beauty though, and I'm getting over the barn "renovation". As a farmer living and working on a family farm that has been in continuous operation since 1936 I always get a pang of sadness and a bit of anger when I see a barn not being used for its intended purpose. It's like a small piece of America is dying. Thank you for your beautiful images and artistic eye.

  47. I'm Rebecca and I live in a very small town in the northwest corner of Montana, near the Canadian border. Nearly 40 years ago, I moved from the West, with my little family, just outside of Boston, and knew I had come to my homeplace, as the Shakers like to say. I didn't get to stay there and through the years, I always thought I'd return to live somewhere in New England. Now I know it will never happen, and I am finding home here, filling the house we built with the beauty and memories I have from those early years. Your blog inspires me to make it happen. I even collected conks from our woods with my granddaughter when she visited at Thanksgiving! In the dark dark mornings up here in the north country, I love to start my day looking at beautiful design and photography blogs. I save yours for last so it can stay with me all through the day! Thank you.

I actually have extended family in New Hampshire which endeared me to your blog. Of course once I visited, I was hooked and come back often (not sure if I always leave a comment - I have a little one that prevents me from doing that a lot of the time).
But what draws me in every time is your style. It's classic, timeless, impeccable and the best of the best. Thank you for sharing your adventures and your home. I love coming to see your beautifully curated collection and hearing the stories behind each piece.

    Merry Christmas! Happy New Year.

  61. Hello, I don't have a blog but found yours when looking for ideas. My 20 yr old son is gutting my grandparents farmhouse. It looks alot like yours {minus your barn}. I think you did an excellent job. He tore off all horsehair plaster and wooden slats and is now framing closets and adding a few more windows. His ceilings are 10 foot high and he's keeping all the radiators. It's hard to figure out furniture placement with low windows and radiators. It's so much fun though. Thanks for such beautiful ideas. I can't figure out where your basement steps are. Arn't they underneath the main steps? Ours are and we don't have that hall that goes underneath the steps. I'd love to see more pics of that area. thanks.

I'm Liz from Indianapolis. I found your blog last spring when I was looking for ideas for our home. It was built in 1916, and we are just now thinking of changing some things (we've been here since 2008). We've got three kids (12, 9, 6), a dog and a cat. I'm sure remodeling will be a piece of cake with them...

  64. Merry Christmas! Like many others have stated, I follow a lot of decorator blogs but rarely comment. I get inspiration and greatly enjoy beautiful homes. Like your kitchen.....ohhhh, incredible!
I'm Peggy from Hudsonville, Michigan. I live about 18 miles from beautiful lake Michigan. I live in an 8 year old cottage style home and love old things.....2 years ago my husband and I traveled to Belarus. I was so taken by our hosts beautiful silverware. I asked if they had second hand stores, of course not, they continue to use what they have, no yard sales there. I left the country disappointed I couldn't bring a piece or two home.
A few weeks later I happened to be browsing in an antique store and saw 1 badly beaten up placesetting of silverplate. It reminded me of the beauty I had seen in Belarus because the design was on the back of each piece matching the front. It was many months later when I researched to find it was an old Oneida set from 1951, Prestige Distinction. Guess what I bought myself for Christmas.....a service for 10.
There is something special about appreciating the things of the past. Seeing beauty in things that at one time were tossed aside for something newer and brighter.
What you share encourages me to look at things with a new perspective. I love to check in here and see how your renovations are coming, and think how I might make this new home of mine full of warm and inviting character.
Well......we have been introduced now......thank you for sharing your beautiful home with all of us.....I may not comment often but you can be sure....I'm here! Blessings to you and your family.

What a beautiful post and what lovely callers you have! I can't think of anyone who can make visitors feel more at home.
Lots of love from here in Hood River! And I always think of you and Dan on your wedding day (and birthday) standing in the gardens of the Columbia Gorge Hotel whenever I'm driving by.
    It's a wonderful feeling.

  69. Thank you for so graciously opening your doors to all of us so we can freely wander through your beautiful home, room to room, at our leisure. And to think I've come and gone so often without so much as introducing myself. I never imagined that you'd be curious about us.

I don't recall how or when exactly I found you but I was hooked from that moment on. I went back to the beginning....didn't want to miss a thing. Since then I've looked forward to each and every new picture and story. You have created such a beautiful home and I appreciate the fact that you're so willing to share it with all of us. It's absolutely gorgeous.

  70. Hello Joan and Dan,

You have been on my blogroll for over a year now. I've followed your blog for some time, but haven't left a comment (something I'm trying to be better about).

The love of your home is so apparent. My daughter and I go through all your words and pictures and love everything.

But, my very favorite was your day with Bunny Williams! How simply wonderful that you had that time with her. I'm from Charlottesville, Va, Bunny's hometown. I had the honor of meeting Bunny last Spring at High Point market and through a funny series of mishaps, had the absolute honor to sit at her table at a luncheon for several hundred interior designers ~ where Bunny was the speaker. I was so overcome that I was actually sitting with Bunny and her staff that I couldn't eat my lunch! I loved your pictures from that post. She's just so warm and puts you right at ease. Here's the link to my post on meeting Bunny. http://www.muracadesign.com/index.php/site/detail/bunny-williams-and-thomas-jayne-at-high-point-market

And, I so enjoy your posts on vintage things. Your Christmas tray is just stunning. Yes, I too wonder about these objects from the past and how they land in their travels somehow in our hands. Where did they come from? Who held them, used them, decorated with them, and enjoyed them? I opened an Etsy vintage shop this fall. I had my first international sale the other day and sent a wood carving to Israel. This little wall hanging came from an old roadside antique shop south of Charlottesville. Where did it come from before that? And now it has passed through my hands and is on its way to a new land, received by hands that will continue its untold story.

Thank you for sharing your story. Merry Christmas and all the best to you both for 2012.

  72. I found your wonderful blog last summer while searching for ideas to update our summer cottage. I fell in love with your beautiful home.

For most of my life I dreamed of living in a big, old house in the country. Currently we split our time between Marco Island, Florida and a tiny summer cottage on a lake in western Pa. It is truly the best of both worlds. But now, through you I can live my dream of a big, old farm house in the New England countryside.

  77. Greetings from Oakville, Ontario, Canada. You and I have chatted via our blogs in the past, I am honoured that you stopped by my blog.
    This is the perfect time to take a moment to tell you that in addition to following the progress of your beautiful home, I so much enjoy your writing style. I've said it before - a book about 'For the Love of a House' would be wonderful. {Hello, publishing houses wake up!}

We are currently in between homes looking for our 'final' house {not living on the streets... but in a place that is not ours}. It is the style of your house that we have had and always loved, reading your blog keeps me on track in our search. We live in a town of old homes that are thankfully protected by the historical society, finding just the right house is a part of our journey. And the right one will speak to us soon I know.

You are lucky to have a wonderful man who is multi talented and able to take on the restorations. And Dan is lucky to have you {dear lady of gracious style}; the love is evident in everything you write.

    Wishing you a Joyous Christmas.

  79. Greetings from Boulder, CO!
I was raised in NY and spent childhood vacations all over New England. After college in Rhode Island, I accidentally wandered off. As soon as my youngest leaves high school, I'm coming home. Your blog has cheered me up when I have felt most homesick. I love all your pictures and am touched by your appreciation of the fine people you have met there. I also enjoy hearing of you driving all over New England to source something. Perhaps some of your antiques came from my ancestors, as a couple lines of my family came to New England in the mid 1600s.
I have a rescue schnoodle named Simon and an adorable wreck of a house that I'm fixing up. I do think both endeavors have the same mentality. We see the potential, add love and patience and reap the rewards.
    Thanks for your inspiration,

  81. Merry Christmas to you too! I am so glad that you and your family are enjoying living in New England. I know exactly what New England is like so I understand. There is nothing like that old world small town charm. Troy is a city but is more like a town to me. We are also just a short drive away from Vermont so I have the best of both worlds I think. Thank you for your comment about the Ikea sofa. Some way some how I will get that sofa to Troy.

  82. Hello Joan,
What a lovely and warm post...couldn't resist to leave a comment now...I discovered your blog several months ago surfing on the internet! I live thousands of miles away....in Holland in a small town in the north of Holland!
I am (just like you) passionated for my house, the interior, exterior, furniture, etc.
For the love of old furniture and lovely french and english antiques and old stuff i began a website several years ago...it's called Country Chique....al the things are photografed in my own house that we've completly restored because it was a very old (1928) and neglected house, we've done it well i can say because we have been in several interior magazines!
So i can surely say that i am in love with my house :-) But you're an inspiration and i love every new post you put on your blog...so thank you for all the lovely photo's....and for you and your family a very beautiful and warm christmas...!
    The kindest regards from Holland

  96. Hi, Joan! I am an educator and an aspiring artist who lives nearby in Concord, New Hampshire, in an 1858 farmhouse. This has been so much fun to read all the calling card comments from readers who, like myself, quietly appreciate the warmth & creativity of your writing, and of course, your beautiful home. I am a relatively new reader since October 2011. I was so intrigued with your story that I went back to the beginning and have been reading the entries little by little. There is an authenticity to your blog that I appreciate. Your decorating always seems to reflect you and Dan and the things that provide beauty and meaning in your lives. You are an inspiration! Thank you for all you do. Have a wonderful holiday!

  124. Merry Christmas Joan,

I'm Amber Kellen from the heart of our great country (Kansas City). What you are currently undertaking is still a sweet dream for me, but perhaps, someday I'll be as lucky as you. I love thrifting, antiquing, flea market hunting, with an absolute passion. So much so that shopping at major retailers is often boring. My mom and I call it being on a thrifting high. After we come home with all our treasures we sit and talk for hours about what we are going to be doing with them and how we can't wait to go out again!

I think it is so sad that most people these days do not take pride in their home- that doesn't mean it has to be fancy, it just seems that people use their home just to "live in". My humble little home is SO much more than that to me; and as you do, we keep going through room after room, quietly, respectfully, listening to what it is telling us. There is no greater compliment than when a stranger comes into our home for the first time and comments on how comfortable it feels...... just like home. I think I would feel this way in your home. You have amazing talent and I hope that you fill you home to the brim with memories to share for a lifetime.
    Warmly and Respectfully,
    Amber

Like you I am an intense nester and my step-daughter told me about you. I too love Bunny Williams and one of my most cherished gifts is a small leather clutch purse which was my grandmother's. Inside are all the calling cards from her wedding shower in 1925. On the back each card has written the gift she received. 138. Joan, Dan, and Ella,

Merry Christmas from the east side of Orlando Florida! I stumbled onto your blog from pinterest and felt as though I had come home.

I love your amazing taste and admire your deliberate decorating style. I've been antiquing since I was in high school and I too prefer to bring things into my home that have been previously cherished.

My husband and I built a new old house and one of my greatest pleasures is searching out the perfect pieces to fill it up and add character. I especially look forward to your posts about new finds. Pieces that need a little elbow grease are my favorite as the fixing and tweaking make them feel more me somehow.

I look forward to each and every post and can't wait to see the barn room! Thank you for sharing.

  167. I have been combing through your house pictures, with great zeal. My husband and I recently relocated to Kansas from our hometown of Virginia Beach, VA for my husband to start his own business. We brought architect ideas with us from Virginia, to design a new home, but we want the feeling of a home that has seen some years. Thank you for the inspiration and especially for the details on paint colors, rug and furniture acquisitions. I, too am a lover of vintage/antique, but love to mix old and new. Again, thank you for the ideas. Best wishes in the new year.

  171. Dear Joan, Dan and Ella,
I'm adhering to that old adage "BETTER LATE THAN NEVER". Wanted to leave you a Christmas THANK YOU but with all 4 of our grown children home over Christmas I just never got to it. With a house full of people the computer was always in much demand! We live in the Berkshires of MA but have been celebrating the holidays at our second home on Cape cod. I am relatively new to the blogosphere (4-5 months) but luckily I found your wonderful blog almost from the start. I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE your blog, and thank you for sharing your beautiful home. I so enjoy seeing your transformations. I love each and every room that you've completed and I can't wait to see the entire reveal of your Barn room. Both you and Dan are incredably talented and the results of all your efforts and labor are evidence of this. You are an inspiration to us all! Thanks so very much for letting us accompany you on your journey and sharing your life with us all. Although we may not always leave comments, please know we enjoy and appreciateyou so very much! ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR POSTS!

  172. Wanted to tell you that the picture of Ella in her red velvet collar on your front porch with your Christmas decorations in your urn behind her is just Beautiful.Remembered AFTER I had pressed the publish button!! We have 2 standard poodles (a 10 year old black male named George and a 5 year old brown male)and they were also sporting their Christmas collars in red and green leather. Have to admit I am somewhat envious that Ella's collar was velvet!! However, I'm not surprised that you would have kicked it up a notch! I'll be on the lookout for velvet ones for next Christmas!Wishing you and Dan and Ella the very best in 2012 and I look forward to spending many enjoyable hours with you in your beautiful home in the year ahead!
