I will say, however, that while Ella can get on the bed anytime, she is only allowed to get on "the pillows" at night, and being the good-girl that she is she abides by the rules!

Oh that is the sweetest picture!!! Spoiled I'm afraid, but that is the best kind (I'm speaking pets anyway). We have cats and you CAN train them with a water bottle, but only if you are consistent, and the rest of the household are also abiding by the rules, however, it does not work if your husband and/or children do otherwise when you are not looking or out of the house. I finally gave up.

All are cats. i tried for years to keep them off the furniture and finally found a compromise. they have cuddles and blankets in each room ,some are in the middle of sofas (they just wouild not have it any other way) that is where you will find them. the family room went to all leather a few years ago which made house keeping alittle easier...

We have six cats in our house (yes,we're crazy) and since we've always had cats, we tend to try and choose furniture that won't easily be ruined so they can lay on it. Out sofas are slipcovered, so we can take them off and wash them if they get hair on them, and at night, since they all like to sleep on the sofas, we cover them with big old sheets to stuo unnecessary shedding on them.
ReplyDeleteLOL... I think we think we train our pets to do what we want, but I am pretty sure they get away with a lot more! I only have cats these days and we used to be very particular about them getting on furniture, but these days we act like Grandparents who let the kids do what they want! I do provide small beds for them to encourage them to sleep on those rather than my pillows! Ella looks like a princess laying there! (Did I miss a post? I see the new headboard but I don't remember seeing the bedroom it's in?)
ReplyDeleteI love your pictures! We have 4 dogs and a cat. The cat goes where ever she wants (except the kitchen counters and tables). The 3 big dogs stay off all furniture and are trained to not go upstairs, but my little Shih Poo goes anywhere she wants. She's smaller than the cat and so adorable I just can't deny her anything!

I wish I didn't but we do! Only 1 gets on the bed and she is a chihuaha. The couch is another story. I've tried to train the creatures to get off and just recently wait for it......I put plastic on the couches. It has kept them off and luckily for me it keeps the kids off too!

We were never going to, but, we do now! We waited until she was no longer doing stupid puppy stuff. We do still block the door off to her on a regular basis. She is allowed on our living room chairs but never the couch. We need one place that she isn't welcome!
ReplyDeleteCats, yes. There's one in my lap right now, and another one behind my head on the back of the sofa. The dogs have their own beds, which are orthopedic and cushy and comfortable (and heated in the winter) so I don't feel bad for not allowing them on the furniture.

To me, the furniture is for lounging, and that means for every single being in the household, including 2 cats and 1 dog. However, given this policy, I only buy leather couches. They're a godsend when dealing with pet hair.

most absolutely! The only thing I don't like, is when my cat goes on the kitchen counters. We have discouraged that, and she rarely does it. Otherwise, anywhere is fair game, and I wouldn't have it any other way =)

Ella is beautiful! We have 2 miniature shnauzer dogs and the answer is yes!!! They are part of our family. I have been contemplated getting white furniture but with spring here it can get a little messy. I may rethink that idea.
ReplyDeleteWe tried for about 30 seconds to keep our dog off the furniture:) She is a bit spoiled but everynow and then we try to keep her off of the couch (brown couch + siberian husky = lots of lint rollers). My fav is when my husband gets up in the morning and Skylar (our dog) jump on the bed and curls up in his spot. She puts her head on his pillow and everything.

ReplyDeleteI always feel that if I don't want pets on the furniture, I shouldn't have pets that can get on the furniture. The only place our cat isn't allowed is kitchen surfaces (for health and hygiene reasons, as you probably guessed). If the pet hair bugs me...I have a vacuum, and I can always get an iguana after my cat passes, right?

ReplyDeleteThere are six dog beds throughout my house (I have two dogs) and I "do" still allow the dogs on our bed.
Adorable pictures! I had a Lab-mix who loved pillows, too. Any time Sam disappeared I knew he was on the bed, curled up on all of the pillows. He would turn over on his back, paws in the air, wanting his tummy scratched when I would catch him, and I loved him too much to fuss at him. Pillow are just things; he was full of love and exuberance. My pets are family and the house is theirs, too. Although, I do keep a sheet on the sofa that is washed frequently (and removed when company comes).

We definitely do! We have a chocolate lab & 2 German Shorthaired Pointers who love the couch & our bed. We've tried to keep them off but they are too sweet to say no to.
ReplyDeleteWe do/don't. Olly and Lizzy our two cats are allowed to go where ever they want...they even sleep between us in the winter. Chelsea and Bubba however are only allowed in the kitchen/bathroom/laundry room/back entry. The reason for that is that Bubba (who does great in the spaces mentioned above) has a bad habit of lifting his leg when he shows off for Chelsea (both fixed) in the other rooms. So...to be fair they are both only allowed that far into the house. They don't mind a whole lot as we spend a most of our time in the kitchen and they can see us if we're watching TV in the living room and when we're on the computer in the office. It works great for us and everyone seems happy.

ReplyDeleteOur cats rule the house and go where they want, but we tell them to get down when they jump on the table and counters. I had one cat several years ago who we trained not to sit on the good furniture in the living room. He was so good that when I was on the living room sofa, would sit looking up at me on the edge of the rug and wait for me to say he could come and sit with me. He wouldn't even set foot on the rug until I called him. Not sure how I trained him to do that!
ReplyDeleteI just bought some fabric to make a "puppy cover" for the couch - the dog hair is everywhere! We just got a new couch and Bergie jumped up on it before the delivery guys had it put together.

Yes, our two dogs can get on the furniture and even the bed. However, Tucker (our little doxi-peke-a-poo) doesn't shed so it's not much of an issue. Lizzy, our Border collie/Corgi cross, does shed ALOT at certain times of the year so we put things on the couches when she's not supposed to get up on them. She totally understands that. However, if they're told "stay down" they will not get up on the furniture.
ReplyDeleteBoth our dogs know when we're not feeling well and then they know it's OK to be on the furniture. Dog hair can wait and be cleaned up later. Comfort is needed now :-)

We don't have any pets yet, but I think I'm going to be a "no". My husband, on the other hand, will be a "yes"...so we'll need to find a happy compromise!

ReplyDeleteWe invite our labs on our bed only if we have thrown a sheet over the duvet. Once we are ready to go to sleep they go to their beds and the sheet comes off. No furniture because we have white slip covers. Lab crud and white just don't cut it for me.
Our Weim, Seal, was always allowed on the furniture...which is why we need new furniture! Our next furkid will be trained to stay off unless invited (yeah, right!).

ReplyDeleteOur miniature schnauzers are allowed on the sofa and chairs but, not our bed. Sometimes once and a while when I know I am changing the sheets that day, I pull them up into bed with us in the morning and cuddle with them. Eventually my husband gets annoyed with one of the dogs licking her paws and the party gets shut down.
Thankfully they are too short to jump up on our tall bed. ;-)

Your timing on this post is perfect, I was just thinking this morning how I would love to have a glamorous bed covering but with a big dog making herself comfortable on the bed its just not possible. I have been known to go up stairs at night only to find paw prints across the quilt. Mr. Hubby and I are very well trained, the dog sleeps with us.

ReplyDeleteWe do not have a dog at this time but have 3 grand-dogs. They run the house when visiting. Isn't that what makes a house a home? Kids and pets and chaos are part of the soul.
I always swore I would NEVER allow pets on my furniture, but now that my poor "puppy" is just an old lady, I've grudgingly allowed her a chair. If anyone sits in her chair, she will pace and pause in front of the offender, giving her best puppy dog eyes..."would you PLEASE get out of MY chair!"

Our puppy (eternally) is a non shedding cock-a-poo mix. He is in our bed every night. He usually does not get on the sofas except for a portion that is covered with a throw, next to me. The cats, ha! The go wherever they please.
ReplyDeleteWe do not allow our Golden Doodle, Savannah, on the furniture for two reasons. The first is the fact that she does indeed shed (Golden Doodles are said to be low to no shedding dogs-ours did not get the no shed gene ;-) We love her anyway though. The second reason for not allowing her on the furniture is because I love furniture and linens and my strict condition in getting a dog was keeping her off. I must admit though-there have been times when I have thought about having her curl up next to my feet in bed at night. She is after all worth more than the furniture!

Caught her one time on the table, after we first got her, and I yelled so loud at her, I think I almost gave her a heart attack. That was years ago, and she's been good since... Anyway, that is when I'm home,to see what's going on.Maybe when she's alone it's a different story...She's not telling.. (grin)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I had a friend once tell me she did not allow her pets on the furniture or on her bed. As the years passed, one of her dogs grew old and got very sick. She wanted so badly at this point for her dog to get onto the bed but she would not because she had been trained not to do so. This broke my friend's heart since she wanted to snuggle with her sick doggy. She has now changed her mind on the pet furniture, bed policy. :)

Cooper is only allowed on the couch. That way I can get in my cuddle time with him. However, when it's bedtime he has his own bed right next to ours. We figure that when it comes time to have kids, I probably won't want a dog in the bed with me while I'm pregnant. There are moments when we really want to let him come in bed with us though. It's so hard sometimes.

Sorry, can't comment on the pets...love animals, but am terribly asthmatic. I let my kids eat breakfast on the couch, so I'm pretty sure if I did have pets they would be part of the family...sitting and sleeping where they chose. But, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the headboard and seeing the entire process of how it was made. It just turned out perfect.
ReplyDeleteMy weenies get to do pretty much whatever they want. They are in and out of my bed any time they want assisted by a ramp. They can get up on the den sofa any time they wish. But I have to say....I don't let them in my living room and dining room....I need some parts of the house that are just for me and that I don't have to worry about cleaning up hair all the time. But they have run of the rest of the home.
ReplyDeleteOur dog is not allowed on sofas or chairs, but she is allowed on the bed, only because I can always wash the sheets and blankets (and they are a smaller investment in comparison to a new sofa). Then we adopted a stray kitten. It's impossible to keep him off furniture. The dog was jealous at first, but she's learned to accept it.

She stays on the back of my husband's chair most of the time and on the back of the sofa in the sun room when she is with me. We have to pick her up and put her on the bed. She does not sleep with us though. We tried that and I couldn't sleep good. She loves her crate to sleep in and gets in it all the time for little naps.
ReplyDeleteAWWW, Ella is adorable!!!! AS far as pet: we don't have any now. After our dog died several years ago we didn't want to go through that again. BUT, we have many GRANDDOGS! And they all know that even though they ARE allowed on the furniture at their homes, they are not at "Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop's house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they stay off! My daughter also can't have a towel hanging on her stove or a kitchen rug cause one of her dogs will chew them.....not here:):) It is funny! XO, Pinky PS, our dogs were allowd on the furniture, but since all the grands SHED terribly, that is why I keep them off.

First off let me say I love your heaadboard! Two, Ella is much smaller then I thought she was, Dylan would never fit on a pillow. Dylan doesn't ever get on furniture, never taught him that he just doesn't because he gets really hot, tons of hair and he doesn't like things to soft. Yes, after having cats most of my life you can teach them not to go on furniture but not the beds. Have a wonderful weekend to you three!
ReplyDeleteOur much-hair-shedding cocker spaniel, Meg is actually encouraged to jump on the couch and bed with us. Never thought we wouldn't allow it since the idea of the dog sleeping with the kids was part of the allure of having a pet. We wanted a family member that offered that much needed therapy, where the kids could complain about their parents without being scolded for it. The kids have grown and left the nest but Meg is still our baby that will hopefully be physically able to snuggle on the couch and bed with us for many more years to come.

We had a Sheltie for 14 years; he did not get on the couch while we were home, but we know that as soon as we left he was on it. Shadow did sleep at the end of the bed with us, every night. ReplyDeleteElla is just the cutest patootie! I would not be able to refuse her anything! We have 2 cats and a dog. All of them are rescue animals. The cats have their own beds, but one of them sleeps with us every night. He puts his head on the pillow and stretches out just like a human. If only I could get a photo of that. Our dog is a large mixed-breed. She probably weights 60 pounds, so she is not allowed on the bed or the furniture. She does get on our ottomans, though, when she's in the mood for some rubbing and petting. She sleeps on the floor beside us and has chewed the dust ruffle on my side of the bed. Luckily no one can see it but me!

Yes - our sweet, crazy dogs are allowed on the furniture...we have several smallish "sheepskin" pads from PetSmart scattered about on sofas, chairs, rugs etc and they know to lie on those, as these can be laundered. I'm afraid our longtime cat is NOT allowed on any furniture - something about his paws being used for burying poo is just too icky! Your Ella is darling! Lindley

Our dogs love to snuggle on the couch and they must be cleverbecause they discovered the trick of being so annoying due to the fact that they are NOT on the couch that they will be INVITED up on the couch so we can avoid the annoying behavior. Said behavior includes, but is not limited to: pacing, staring, placing head on couch, placing head on couch while staring, pacing again, placing one paw on couch, placing one paw on couch while staring, and so on...

ReplyDelete..and yes, here 2 labradors & 5 cats, on everything, just limits what you pick to decorate with, there is something good for the soul to see a cat curled up on the chair...my friend has 6 labradors, she had to put a twin bed next to her king so she, her husband & all dogs can sleep in comfort...she also dresses them ALL up for every holiday for pictures....
Oh..thank you that I'm not the only one who makes space for the furry's. My Newfs of course don't know their size and manage to leave no room for the rest of the family.

When I heard Bunny Williams speak a few years ago at an antique show lecture she spoke extensively about this subject. She talked about placing a throw on the couch and they knew where it was okay to lounge. My Cavalier knows that she can hop up on the couch on her spot. I have a DH that doesn't care much for dogs on the bed BUT as soon as he gets out of the bed and out the door guess where Miss Scarlet heads for, our bed. I would have her next to me all the time but in our house there are some restrictions and DH knows she is going to jump on the bed as soon as he leaves so he pulls the comforter up over his pillows. Now where is that little laughing guy when you need him?

ReplyDeleteI have 2 Siberian Huskies who think they are lap dogs. We gave up trying to keep them off the furniture years ago - instead we've invested heavily in weekly trips to the groomer and a dyson pet vac. It's the teenagers I worry more about. ha!

They are family to us and all of my furniture was purchased with washable slipcovers (white slipcovers...2 black cats...funny, but it works). I have hardwood floors and no wall-to-wall carpeting. My vacuum and steamer are my best cleaning buddies. Yes, there is hair floating around on a daily basis but it is a small price to pay for the company of these sweet little friends.

If you'd told me 10 years ago I would have two dogs in my home someday I would have called you a liar. At first, it was so cute how they tried to get up on the sofa/chair. Now at 85 lbs they make themselves at home and slipcovers are a way of life. But less so in my bedrooms. There are a few limits.

ReplyDeleteI know I'm late to the party but I had to comment about 'pets on the furniture'. We are lucky that our pets let US on the furniture. Even our blind cocker spaniel foster, Babe, finds her way on to the furniture. She knows when it's bedtime and she jumps up on our bed. (she's a bit of a bed hog)

Don't, but I've also got a serious shedder. Our golden retriever fortunately will only get up on furniture when prompted, otherwise I'd be washing throws and tape rolling like a mad-women! My sister lets her big lab sleep with her and one x-mas bought her a t-shirt that says "sleeps with dogs" and we all had a laugh over that because she is single!!!

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! A very wise man - my dad :) - once said "You get a good dog and you're lucky if he lives 10 or 12 years. You can always buy a new couch". From that day forward, I've let my dogs on our furniture. In fact, we bought a Cali King bed specifically for our 4 greyhounds in their bedroom. And we tested at least 100 sofas for our family room so there was enough room for my 6'4" husband and at least 2 dogs to comfortably lay down at the same time.

ReplyDeleteYou can probably guess my answer- Gypsy has the run of the house and loves to snuggle on the sofa, chairs and beds. Thankfully, our sweet golden doodle did get the no-shed gene which is SUCH a treat!!

All bedding and upholstery in my house is chosen to be washable or resist doggie damage, so I'd say yes. Sometimes that means ugly beach towels thrown over things, though.
ReplyDeleteOur labs, Austin and Amos are allowed on our bed, but have to stay on the "dog quilt" that gets washed regularly. NOT on the pillows. I have woke up in the middle of the night, and there's a puppy sleeping next to me with his head on my pillow though... ReplyDeleteI've never read one of your posts that I didn't love but I must say, this is one of my favorites. And yes, they're allowed on. The other night I didn't have the heart to remove the dog when I came to bed late so slid him over to my side so my husband had more room and went and slept in another bed.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm just catching up with you...and I love this post! Ella looks so comfy and content on your lovely bed. Miss. Ginger the Doxie loves to be on the bed but she's stays on her blanket that we put at the food of the bed. She does try to get 'under' the covers every now and then though but that's a no-no. We have an ottoman next to the bed so she can jump up but at fourteen, that's getting a little tricky. I love having her all snuggled up next to me though, wouldn't have it any other way.

I have two dogs and they are forever shedding hair so they arent allowed in the house (except just inside the door on a mat) but they have their own fluffy bed to sleep on- a kennel and a day bed :)
ReplyDelete101 comments like 101 dalmations. :) Yay pets and I think you can train cats to stay off if you spray them with water every time they get on furniture. I personally allow my cats on furniture, just not tables/counters. ;)
