I love the gray of the vanity with the wood. My mother lives in a 6 sided cabin (I know it sounds crazy when I say it) and I would love to see more use of color like this.
I'm loving the rustic feel of this room! The cabinet for the sink worked out very well adding a bit of elegance to balalance out the look and keep it from being TOO rustic. Based on what you said in an earlier post, this room wasn't a budget buster either, which makes it very inspiring - like I could actually give my guest bath a makeover!
Really beautiful, Joan. I love the stained wood walls, and the beautiful decorative statements. That dresser with your find of a top really looks stunning. Love the hardware! Did you paint the porcelain baubles? I've seen them before, but I've always seen them in black, never gray. It's really gorgeous. I also love the silicone tipped bulbs in everything. Are your silicone tipped bulbs for standard sized lights? Around here, I can't find anything but the chandelier (small) bulbs. Where are you getting yours? I think they'd be PERFECT for my sconces in the living and dining room, don't you?? Whatelse - oh, the barn door! LOVE LOVE LOVE ... that was a great idea for the small space. I was wondering if there was a mirror in there at first, but then I saw your mirror on the opposite wall! :) And not that you ever would - but boy oh boy was I glad to see that there was nothing hanging from those antlers! LOL! Gosh, I just love this. If this is the direction you're going in the barn room, then I'm totally on board! You always do great work - this is no different. Congratulations on another fabulous room! xo, A
Hi Joan, Absolutely beautiful! I love how everything came together- from the dresser to the chandelier, sink, artwork and the sliding barn door along with the walls and ceiling covered with wood. This room is breath taking! Congratulations on another job well done and thanks for sharing.
I love the old barn door! That is wonderful. The project really turned out well--you have quite the eye. Love those prints with the maple frames, I can never leave one in the antique store.....
The barn half bath is amazing...great attention to detail...the bureau turned vanity would make Sarah Richardson proud...the light fixture is perfect, and color scheme is rich. Love the recycled marble...wonderful job...lots of hard work with superb results. Judy
C'est magnifique!!!! Beautiful tones and textures layered one upon the other! What time of day did you take the pictures? the light quality is something else!
The touch of color from the geraniums is a delight. Putting the mirror "behind" the barn door - brilliant! The little bird prints (water colors?) with their birds eye frames above the WC are speaking to me.
At the powder room entry, I like the subtle change of scale of the vertical wood joints. Nice touch!
Joan, I love it and it was especially fun seeing the items before they were transformed and installed. Two questions: Where did you find the gray towels (hand towel) and are the candlelight bulbs from Luminere? I am so grateful for that resource and have converted all of my sleeves to wax sleeves using Luminere. They are such a nice company to deal with, thank you. Karen
Joan a beautiful job!!! Love all the details. I also love how rustic but still elegant it feels. One question?? What are the two little porcelain buttons on the back splash?? the gray looks amazing with the marble!! Great choices on your part, as always, kathysue
It's perfect - every little detail works together - from the rustic wildlife paintings, to the shot of blue in the painting - another wonderful room that you've created.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Love every detail Joan, the door, the fixtures, the cabinet and sink. And the lighting in that small room is just fabulous, your pics are magazine worthy! xo~ T
Absolutely love this, especially rustic and vintage combined. I have a mountain log cabin, so I'm a fan of rustic, and I love seeing old pieces re-purposed and antiques mixed in, without everything being "campy" on the one hand or feeling too formal, on the other. Great job!
WORK OF ART! Absolutely beautiful down to the last little detail. Your images are what makes me so in love with design. It's so nourishing to enjoy visual beauty. xoTrina
super, joan. everything. you know you gotta give us the name of the gray on that chest. what a transformation that was. as usual, everything is top notch, lady. donna
The bath turned out amazing! You style is impeccable. I can't wait to see the barn room, it also looks like Dan did a fabulous job on the floors! Melanie
So unique! I love rooms that are personal and don't look like everything else out there, and that certainly holds true for your half bath. I love all the details and the barn door is fabulous. Claudia
I love this! You design exactly how I like to... there is nothing like giving new life to beautiful old objects. That's what makes your bathroom so wonderful. The sink cabinet is perfect. I'm amazed that you found the tassel knob to match... You are so good! Thank you for continuing to share and inspire.
Joan: I have been following your blog since the beginning and I am always happy when I visit. I wonder if I could trouble you for the paint color you used on the dresser/vanity? It is exactly what I am looking for a dresser I would like to breathe new life into.. Everything is lovely as usual. I love to have a story behind pieces we live with.. Laura
I love it all: the sink cabinet the horizontal walls, the barn door, the door and window casings, that fabulous lamp and chandelier and those beautiful wide-board floors. From what you have done in the rest of the house, it comes as no surprise that you pay such attention to detail. Just lovely, Joan. Best...Victoria
Your photography is great and I think I could safely say my kids would love to use your potty! :) {Ok, so would I!!} The sun on the wood reminds me of alpine glow in Alaska.
This post my heart sing this morning. Thank you! How I love those burled-maple frames and the painted Victorian pulls against the dusky colors. And the door! Wow!
I do not know where you find your inspiration, but your rooms are always and absolutely perfect - restful, warm and beautiful. Thank you for sharing and being my, and I'm sure many others, inspiration.
You amaze me! You have pulled this together so well! I love the idea of the chest of drawers turned into a sink base! I wish I would of had this kind of foresight when we re-modeled our home. The wood finished walls are so cozy and rustic. I love that thick arch as you go into the room and of course the sliding barn doors are the icing on the cake! Perfecto!!
Hi Joan Stunning a fabulous contrast to the other parts of the house. I love all the old things you've given a new life. Kind Regards Karen PS This is a small sample of what's to come THE BARN ROOM
Fabulous! Just absolutely stunning beyond words. I love the constrasts in your home. Everything about this bathroom is beyond words wonderful. Its so interesting and full of surprises. What a delight to view. By far the best of the best rooms I've seen .... EVER! Your entire home is lovely.
Joan, I love this so much, especially after reading about how it came about! And, thank you for your encouraging comment on ppt, as we are early in the journey on our renovation. But, seeing transformations like this are so inspiring! And, it also reminds me to keep taking pictures!!!
Oh Joan, that is one fabulous little room but I have to say I seriously gasped when I saw that adorable dish with the little holder cradling that lovely chunk of soap!
Barn wood, sigh. Barn door which is a real barn door, double sigh. And, I don't think I missed where you said it so I will ask: did you have to do something to the marble top between the time you found it and used it? And if so, what?
It is perfection! I LOVE the dresser/vanity!!! It is gorgeous. I love that you used old pieces that all just fit together so perfectly. Those tassel pulls make the piece!!!!
I also LOVE the wood walls. They have the perfect patina.
Joan - Such an inspiration for designing with things you love, not with only what is popular in magazines and on home design shows. It is easy to see that you put your heart and soul into your home. We are still busy doing that here at Shady Grove Farm...seems as I had just started to blog about the house we fell in love with and was quickly overwhelmed with projects and how to share them. Thank you for posting your progress, it sparks the desire to keep giving our home new life. Katie
This is just beyond gorgeous! I truly love everything about it! The lamp is so interesting...is it new made to look old or original? Love the flowers in the jar, the custom sink cabinet, the faucet, the marble back splash/counter, the hardware, the light fixture...even the lock...so original! Gorgeous photography with the afternoon light!
anon 9:45- The picture light is hard-wired. If you click "older" post at the bottom of this page and look at the post right before this one, I talk about the making of the barn half bath and in the 5th photo up I show the wiring for this light.
As you can see, I am searching through your blog:) This so reminds me of our powder room in our second house. We used BARN BOARD on the walls and Joe also made a shelf out of the wood that ran around the room so I could dislay some treasures:) Love the antlers, I have one that I need to mount like that. Another great space in your beautiful home. XO, Pinky
so this new bathroom covered up a small window on the original outside wall. Did you leave the window in so it is part of the bathroom? or was the small window taken out? What room was that small original window in, in the big house?
Nance, ha- no we didn't leave that window as that would have now been a window from the kitchen into the half bath! That window was originally in a very steep (and dangerous) rear stairs for the house- the area is now part of the kitchen and that little window was removed with the rest of the ell here.... http://fortheloveofahouse.blogspot.com/2008/12/no-ell.html
Joan you are the ray of light in the world. I appreciate and love your photos. I study them to see if I can use any of the composition in the photos I take with dogs. If that room had a claw foot tub, I'm pretty sure I would live in it.
ReplyDeletePlease and thank you.
It's gorgeous!
Very beautiful, looks like a room straight out of a Colorado fancy cottage ;-)....is it just a sink in there or also a toilet?
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's interesting how you didn't hang a mirror over the sink. Can't wait to get all the details in your next post.
ReplyDeleteSTUNNING. I love it. Wow!! I cannot say enough about how you the vision you must have had to make that happen!! I love it!
