the next best thing since "the clapper" ;)

I recently discovered this little gem of a dimmer when looking for a dimmer for a light fixture in the barn mud room.  Since you all seemed to like the screw-in light socket dimmer I told you about here, I wanted to share this with you too!  I am so smitten with the dimmer I walk around the house trying to find other lamps to use it on!
This 3-level (low/medium/high) touch dimmer only works on metal lamps.  You simply plug your metal lamp into this small box converter and voila!  You then touch any metal part of the lamp and the dimmer activates: one tap- low, two taps- medium, and three taps- high!

low...

medium...

high...

love!

I found the dimmer for approximately $10 at a TrueValue hardware store, but you can also find them at Amazon.

  2. Wonderful product! I was so inspired by you the other day when I read about your barn room chandelier. I rescued a fixture from a garbage can a few years ago, I had my husband hang it in the kitchen Saturday while I brought up MY box of old chandelier parts and pieces! We now have a fun sparkly fixture...the entire thing is made up of pieces I have collected over the years! Michelle!

  3. We use these, too, especially in the bedrooms. They were awesome when the kids were little and we didn't want to wake sleeping babies just to check on them, and we still love being able to adjust the level of light.
These will be life (and light) changers for many of your readers! :-)

  5. My grandmother had lamps like this when I was a child, and I was absolutely fascinated by them (which probably did not help her fingerprint-removal campaign).

I had no idea you could convert any lamp to work that way.

  6. Joan,
Just the mention of the clapper cracks me up. What a clever gadget you found for us. I have used nearly everyone of your handy tips for lighting and chandelier sleeves. I'll have to get one of these for the 2 metal lamps we have in the house. Thank you!

  7. Genius!! The hubby added dimmers all over the house for me, I like the soft look they give a room.

  8. Well isn't that something?! I didn't know something like that existed. Thanks for the heads up. I'm now trying to think if I have any lamps that would work on.

  12. I don't know....the Clapper is pretty cool; that is, unless you put it on your Christmas tree and then you get bronchitis so your coughing constantly turns the tree on and off.

  17. Thanks for the tip Joan. I'm ordering one from Amazon asap.
By the way, saw cousin Linda last week and she remembers Dan from her class. She was so surprised when I told her how I know you through blogging. It certainly is a small world, isn't it!?

  18. Thanks for the tip! I didn't know such a gadget existed. A few years ago I bought a cute little lamp from a local antique mall that operates the same way with the three-touch light levels (low, medium, and high). I have it on my kitchen counter, and it really is handy to be able to just lightly touch it with an elbow or finger if I need more light and my hands are full. But, mine doesn't have the plug you describe. You've got me curious, so I'm going right now to see if maybe where the bulb screws in has an adapter of some sort. Hmmm.

  19. ...a little bit like the original dimmers...the ones on kerosene lanters...short wick...little light...medium wick...medium light...long wick...high light...aren't you glad we don't have to clean those chimney lanterns!

  20. My mother in law puts these on every lamp she can, including some floor lamps with swing arms. People are constantly accidentally touching them and turning the lights on and off.

    That's a great price too.
Love the lamp on the vanity by the way.
