the tree fern

It was an overcast evening and I was sitting on the front porch after working all day in the yard...

having a glass of wine and watching Dan and Big Blue fertilize the meadows...

(I adore this vintage iron table I found at an estate sale in Dallas many years ago.  It sat on a patio in the yard in Dallas and over the years some of the tile pieces came off and got lost, so here I've been filling the empty holes with thick flakes of mica that I find in the gravel driveway!...

love the little flower at the base!)
Ooops... sorry, I got off topic;)

So, I'm sitting on the front porch and I realize I've never shown you the little fern that grows high up in the large maple tree at the front door.  I was enchanted by the little fern the first year we moved into the house, and every year it reappears in the spring!

I went inside to get the camera and when I came out a single ray of sunlight was shining directly on the little fern!  I think the fern-gods wanted you to see it too;)

Isn't it so, so sweet?!

This is the same tree that has the little Jan Barboglio house blessing cross hanging on it.

Another view from the front porch!

Wishing you a wonderful Fourth of July!!

  2. That is so wonderful - I didn't know ferns could grown in trees. My husband adores ferns. We have a volunteer fern that sticks out amidst our vinca that I keep just for that reason. Hope you have a Happy 4th. Live Free or Die :)

  3. Happy Fourth of July to you, too! The view of the tree from your perch on the porch is a lovely one. Sweet mental image of sitting on the porch, glass of wine in hand, listening to the hum of the tractor, enjoying the sunshing ... ahhhhh.

  11. Here in GA (and other places too I bet) we have "Resurrection Ferns" which grow on the north side of oak trees - they "pop back up" after it rains from being all dry, brown, and dead looking - and we have had a LOT of rain lately! Hurrah - after all the drought of recent years. Resurrection Ferns are smaller (length of fronds is shorter too)and closer to the tree trunk than this pretty one. Thanks for sharing! Happy 4th!

  13. What a lovely pocket fern - not an official name :-) - and wonderful old tree. I love the way ferns show up in little places. I have one that appeared between our back brick step and stone retaining wall. I don't know what dirt it's managed to find to grow in. Interestingly, it's a variety I bought years ago for a window box at the FRONT of the house that long ago died (and isn't part of our local flora). Don't have any idea how its descendant showed up on the opposite side of the house between a rock and a hard place - literally! Happy 4th!

  22. Hello Joan, I hope you had a great Fourth. I love all the little surprises that Nature provides when we take the time to appreciate. Your little tree fern is a perfect reward for all your work in renovating your grounds.

  25. Its so fun to see all of the beautiful things in your yard, as well as your home. I'm so glad you post them. I loved the little flower at the base of your table also. Best regards, Wenda

  26. What a sweet idea putting the cross on the tree. It reminds me of the Jewish mezuzah which is affixed to the outside of the door.

I love ferns, my rescued one multiplied like crazy! I've just planted a Japanese painted fern, it is beautiful. They look lovely in a shade garden. It does not multiply like the common green fern, but when it does become fuller and thicker I will divide it.

Your table is beautiful. I've often toyed with doing a mosaic table for my patio. I just need to find the right base.

Looks like you had a wonderful and relaxing Independence Day! Keep cool & drink lots of iced tea ~ as they say in New England - it's a scortcha out there!

  27. How funny. My mom's house, where I grew up, has GIANT maple trees on the parking strip and licorice fern com up in the crotches of them every year. I never thought it was odd because it's been that way since I was born. Now that you point it out at your house, it is a wee bit unusual, now isn't it?
    Happy 4th back atcha!

  34. Hi Joan:

It's amazing how a little fern like that can grow into a tree! We New England folks really enjoy the nice weather and green plants during our short summer season!

I just love your blog. I'm always looking for inspiration for my Old New Hampshire home.

Take care and thanks again for the inspiration!

  36. so lovely joan. I have a pop-up fern in a sidewalk crack that I adore each year when it comes up.

just watched an interview on the golf channel of raymond floyd, who has a home in NH with a rare (only 6 or so in the state, I think they said) round or octagonal barn with three stories. since the house is in NH, it made me think of you. do you know of his place? just made me wonder....

hope you are having a great summer...donna
