meet the new girls- yes, TWO new girls!!!

And, we all speak "y'all!!"
Please meet our newly adopted girls-  Magnolia (1 year old from Texas) on the left, and Louise (2 years old from Louisiana) in the center, and you all know sweet Ella (who is 11) on the right!  As you can see above ;) and as I've mentioned in previous posts, we have a fondness for black dogs, which are often the last to be adopted and are so common in the south.  In fact, the director at the shelter where Louise came from said that 60% of their dogs are black.  You can read more about "black dog syndrome" HERE and HERE

The story (fair warning, it's a long one!):
Every night after Amelia died so suddenly in January, I would blow out the alter candle on the kitchen island (which I mentioned HERE on my post on gratitude) and pause and tell her how much we loved and missed her.  After several months I began telling her to find us another sister.  Then after that I started adding "find us a girl that needs us, a girl just  like you."
In early April I started to "tiptoe" around Petfinder. (Which if you are not familiar with it is a wonderful site where you can find animals from shelters and rescues across the country.  I will do a post on it and all the wonderful shelters and rescues I have come in contact with in the past several months.)  I would look at a couple of dogs and then close the page as I just wanted Amelia back... my heart wasn't ready.   Slowly, very slowly, my heart began to mend a bit and I knew it was Amelia's legacy for us to rescue and love another dog.  I began looking most days, and even though there were so, so many dogs I never fell in love or felt like I had found "the one."  For me personally, the whole adopting process is an emotional and spiritual journey, and I try to listen closely to my heart.

Early May I found Magnolia (then named "Blaze") on Petfinder. I saw her face, read her story and I couldn't even look at another dog.  I felt in my heart that she was the one.  I had chills.  She had been dumped on the side of the road in a small town in Texas.  She had one of her puppies with her. Someone picked up the puppy and left her on the side of the road to starve, get killed by a car or coyotes.  Can you even imagine?  She was skin and bones and was fostered by Kurtis who is a friend of the woman who found her.  Kurtis is involved with Min-Pin rescue in Texas and he took her in as a courtesy to find her a home.   Her post on Petfinder said she was a sweet and gentle girl who needed a home.  She sounded like a good match for Ella (who is an active 11-year old;)  After talking to Kurtis on the phone I was convinced she was our girl!  The only issue with her was that she was heartworm positive.  Her heartworm treatment was being done in Texas and she is expected to make a full recovery (she has been doing great btw), but because she was HW positive we couldn't use the animal transport that we used to bring Amelia up from Texas as they do not transport HW positive dogs. So, a road trip to the south was planned.  Kurtis very kindly offered to drive up to 5 hours to meet us to make the pick up easier for us.  We planned to meet him and Magnolia in Baton Rouge at the end of July, since my sister, niece and nephew live there with their families and we could visit family and adopt Magnolia at the same time.  Win/Win!

Magnolia
and her precious "wonky" ear!
Magnolia is our "Director of Fun and Play!"

I didn't think she looked like a "Blaze" (named for the white blaze on her chest); I thought she looked sweet and feminine, and thought her name should reflect that, so after asking LOTS of questions when I called to inquire about her I found out she was found close to "Magnolia," Texas and I immediately knew we would name her Magnolia!  I liked the connection to her rescue and I liked the connection to my southern roots.

It was a good week/week and a half later when I had my first omg.... this is just like Amelia moment. Just like Amelia, Magnolia was in a situation where she had been rescued and was in the home of someone who rescues many dogs, and she spent most of her time in a crate.  It was the first moment when I realized that this is the dog that Amelia had chosen for us- she sent us a dog just like her, just like I had asked her to do.  Unbeknownst to me, there would be many, many more of those moments and coincidences to come.  So many.  Uncanny things that were unique only to Amelia.  I felt like it was her way of letting me know that this indeed the girl we were supposed to adopt!

During the weeks leading to our road trip to Louisiana I had the thought late one night (after a glass or two of wine:)...  "since we are going to go on such a long drive- 1,700 miles each way-  to pick up one dog, and there are SO many in the south that need homes, why not adopt two??"  Having three dogs has been a dream of ours for a long time (especially when we lived in Dallas and we thought about moving here to New Hampshire. It was just part of the whole "living in New England" package for us;  I guess you could say it was on our bucket list;)  But, had it not been for Amelia I would never have had the courage to actually get two at one time!   My thought was "wouldn't it be fun to adopt a dog from Louisiana (where family lives) and call her "Louise?!"  So, I opened up Petfinder that night and typed in the Baton Rouge zip code where my niece lives, where we stay when there.  On page two I saw this face (below) which stopped me in my tracks and I had to catch my breath.  Those eyes..... that sweet, sweet face.

Louise's Petfinder photo

I glanced up on the page of her posting, and I'll be damned....
her name was LOUISE!  A sign?
  I think so.
I had not even mentioned a second dog to Dan at this point, so I asked him the next day what if we adopted a second dog when we drove down south?  He looked at me a little funny and then I told him I had found a dog!  I showed him the posting on Louise and he, too, was immediately smitten.  I called the Denham Springs Animal Shelter  to ask about her.  The shelter, which is just outside of Baton Rouge, is the only non-kill municipal shelter in the entire state of Louisiana.  She sounded like a perfect match for us.  We decided that we would stop to meet her on our way into Baton Rouge.
It was 97 degrees and HUMID the day we arrived into town and the heat index felt like it was 125!  And, let me just say that this southern girl has totally forgotten the extreme heat and humidity of the south.  I literally melted the whole time we were in Louisiana.  We walked in to the very clean and well taken care of, but bare-bones shelter (think lots of heat-soaked concrete with large wire cages with tin roofs shelter) and to the chorus of a hundred barking dogs. It is much larger than this photo shows, but I loved how they have a doggie pool for all the dogs!  These are the lucky ones- they are safe and tended to, and you could tell the entire staff really, really cared for all of them.  We were so impressed with the facility.

It was HOT, did I mention that :)   We slowly walked around the shelter just looking at all the dogs and looking for Louise.  A shelter worker came up to us and we told her we were there to see Louise.  She pointed to her cage where she bunked with two other dogs and as we walked up to the cage the other two dogs came up to meet us, but Louise stayed laying in her 1/2 of a two-part plastic crate that was used for a bed and she didn't even open her eyes.  Her breathing was short and shallow and I asked Dan if she was okay?  I literally thought she might be dead. Come to find out, she had been at the shelter for a YEAR AND FIVE MONTHS.  I wouldn't have gotten up either.  She had been there, done that and it was just too hot to expend energy on people who were just going to pass her by.... again.
The shelter worker asked if we would like to get her out.  Yes.  The second she opened the cage door and Louise came out into the fenced open courtyard area she was a totally different dog.  She greeted us gently, then went to each and every worker who was out in the courtyard area and greeted them.  We walked her, spent time with her and Ella together- they were great together, and she was simply delightful.  We adopted her there and then, but decided (this was a tough one) to leave her where she was comfortable and knew her surroundings for a couple of more days.  We would pick her up on Saturday, the same day we would meet Kurtis to pick up Magnolia. My niece has three children and two (very sweet) dogs, and I just thought it would be a LOT to bring her into.  In the end it worked out perfectly, but as we put her back into the cage she looked so dejected.   I told her that mama and daddy would be back for her.

Louise
with her beautiful butterscotch eyes!
Louise is a sweet, gentle lovebug.

On Saturday morning Kurtis arrived with little Magnolia.  She was smaller than I anticipated even though she had put on some weight since being rescued off the side of the road, but she is still only 34 pounds and our vet says will probably only gain another 4.  She was sweet and precious, and a bit scared.  One of the first things Dan said to me after we met her was "she has a wonky ear - just like Amelia."  I had not seen it in any of the photos of her, but she has a funny little "wonky" ear that stands straight up at times, just like Amelia's.  It was the second just like Amelia moment.  After some time with her we put her in the crate for a nap and Dan and I, and Ella, went to the Denham Springs Shelter to pick up Louise.

When we got to Louise's cage on this day she was standing at the door wagging as if she knew that we would keep our promise and come back for her.  Once back to my niece's house we bathed both dogs immediately!  Louise's coat went from dusty and tons of loose hair to a beautiful black with reddish-brown (I actually thought she was going to be a huge shedder which is a major concern of mine, but I decided that is what vacuums were made for!! That's how much I immediately loved her!)  I am very thankful to say she hasn't shed since.  Ella sheds more than she does;)  All the girls got along great together and that night we had a big family dinner/party and they were right in the middle of it all and enjoying every minute- a baby, kids running around, adults, dogs, music and the smell of smoked brisket (thank you Forest!).  The next morning my adorable little 6 year old great-niece, Stella, was playing dress up with all of dogs- putting bows and headbands on them and the dogs were so sweet and gentle and loved all the attention!

We left that day- all getting into the car (a Yukon XL to be exact as we could not have fit into an actual car:) with two crates, three dog beds, luggage, and two concrete planters my sister gave me (!) and embarked on a 3-day road trip home!

Omgosh... I don't think I will ever adopt another dog without doing a 3-day road trip! I HIGHLY recommend it!  The immediate bonding and immersion into our new lives together was sweet, wonderful and amazing.  We all bonded immediately with all the puppy-breaks, the different hotel rooms, the morning walks to do business,  the giving of food, etc.  The new girls are (thankfully) great travelers.  They were initially closed in their crates (Ella was not) to make sure they were going to be okay with the car and not get car sick, and then mid day-one crate doors were opened and they went in and out freely from then on. It really was the best of times!  We love a good road trip and a rescue road trip was just that much better.

This Saturday will be the girls one-month anniversary of being "home" and we can not get over how acclimated and natural they are in the house and on the property.  They are sweet, gentle, loving and playful, and seem very grateful to have a mama, daddy and sisters (not to mention air condition ;) Ella has been wonderful with them.  They all get along great. No one has food issues or toy issues, thankfully.   Magnolia and Louise act like soul sisters and are best buds.  They love and respect Ella, but have really bonded with one other.  Ella and Magnolia are big playmates.  They are doing so well learning their manners and new rules.  I'm so impressed with how quickly they have learned their boundaries both inside and out. They have been so good and easy to train that we are wishing we would have gotten a third:)  Lots more to teach and learn- for them and us.  Especially how to tell them apart in a split second!!

 sweet Ella!
seriously, the best girl in the world.

 the girls chillaxin!

Magnolia

Magnolia and Ella spooning!

This is what the bed and the sofas look like on a daily basis ;)

Making herself at home!

It rips my heart out to think that this precious girl, Louise, spent a year and five months in a shelter.  We are doing everything in our power to make up for that.  As you can see she is taking to the "good life" quite well:)  Can you even imagine what a bed filled with down pillows and comforter feels like after sleeping on concrete for so long.  Poor baby has large bald, rub spots on her elbows from the concrete.  They are slowly starting to reduce in size.  Did I mention she is a lovebug?!

Enjoying some puppy-pops (aka ice cubes) after dinner!

A little bone-chewing time in the yard!

A house with three dogs definitely has more dog hair on the sofas, more scratches on the floor, a LOT more poop in the yard;), dog toys and bones in every room and on every sofa and the master bed, and we couldn't love it all more (well, except for that lots of poop part;)!  They are lots of sugar, and lots of love, and lots of laughs!

I hope our two new precious rescue girls will encourage someone to please consider Adopting, and to also consider dogs that are older, have or have had heartworms or the dog who is shy or seemingly uninterested. Don't overlook the quiet, unimposing ones.  I've found them to be the diamonds in the rough.  When you bring them into your lives they will blossom and shine!  I can't imagine overlooking these two and not making them a part of our lives. Our hearts are larger now because of them.

If you have any questions or concerns about adopting please leave them in the comment section and I will address them in my next "dog" post!
xxojoan

  1. Am so happy for you & Dan Joan! And especially happy for the puppies - all three of the girls! It is so hard to loose them: our 14 1/2 yr old chocolate Lab Lucky died last November - thought we would wait till after the holidays to get a new girl but were so sad & lonely we only waited 5 days before getting our blonde Lab Norma Jean! Going from a sedate 14 1/2 yr old to an energetic 8 week old was a big change but we love our girl and are beginning to think she might need a rescue sister!

I am in love with this fur ball. I cannot imagine a home without pets. It would just be a house. Thank you for telling us your story. Miss this blog so much. 9. This post has made me cry - tears of sadness at what these two have been through (and how someone could be so cruel to leave a dog at the side of a road!!!), but then tears of joy to hear how it all turned out and how happy everyone seems to be. Then I had to LOL at your niece and the dogs and the hairbows! How precious.

Congrats on the new additions! They are all three adorable.

She was 13 and such a part of our lives but I just kept thinking that I didn't want another dog I just wanted Savannah back. You made a similar comment regarding your sweet Amelia...you understand..after reading your story, I feel like maybe it's time to open my heart and I think I want to adopt two pups, thanks for that encouragement. Remember how she would comfort you when you were sad and that is what she would want to do now- and the only way she can is through her legacy and you loving another dog. From my experience, it is the only thing that heals the broken part. Please let me know who you find/who finds you on your journey of loving again!!!
(p.s. our first girl Kelsey- was from the HS of Ft.Worth and Ella is from the SPCA of Dallas- so maybe you can start there!!! :)

  19. This makes me so happy. Your girls are beautiful! We found our dog Bear almost dead on the side of the highway 3 years ago. He spent six weeks at the Humane Society vet here in NJ. They poured hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars into his medical care. Once he was somewhat recovered we adopted him- without ever having had a proper meeting. Well, you know the rest- this Rottie-Pit mix is a little piece of heaven. Smart, funny and above all- loving and supremely gentle. Rescue dogs-via their difficult experiences- can be just the best. (PS- love your house and your transplant's take on New England!)

  20. Your two look happy and they look like sisters! We, too, a month and a half ago adopted a sweet girl (we prefer smaller dogs, however) who originally was from Louisianna but was in a kill shelter and was rescued from there to a Kansas no kill shelter. She is sweet and loving and we wonder what her prior life was like. She, too, is black and not "cute" but she is so sweet and I can just imagine when she's sitting in the chair looking at everything wondering how she became so lucky to be here! She was in the Kansas shelter for 10 months -- she's a black dog, right! Even though she is small and smaller dogs are usually in and outs! Doogie likes her but there are some issues -- his other friend never did get on HIS sofa or HIS bed but he's learning to share and they will sleep together. He just sometimes reminds her that she really doesn't belong there -- LOL! We named her Daisy (not because she's cute as a Daisy but we like "D" names for dogs (and we give them last names, too -- hers is DAWG -- Doogies is DOOGIE) And besides adopting from shelters, the biggest help to the problem is spay and neuter; spay and neuter!!! Where we got Daisy told us that every dog not spayed is responsible for 600 dogs -- a lot of those end up in shelters or dead by the side of the road! Congratulations on your two new family members!

    1. hi Martha. SO true- biggest problem is spay and neuter. That stat is sad and shocking. Love that you adopted Daisy Dawg!!! Love both pups names. (I have a list of dog names and Daisy is on it:) Being such a wonderful baker I bet you make them homemade dog cookies too!!!

  21. So precious.....We too, have adopted from the South. Our first, a black lab, also died suddenly after only 10 months. When we went to adopt again, also from the South, we ran into similar coincidences that made us sure our sweet Bailey was guiding us to our next dog. Our precious Maggie was dropped at a kill shelter in North Carolina after having a litter of dead puppies. She is the purest soul and it is incomprehensible how someone could throw her away. Like you, we hope we are making up for the difficult times she has endured. Enjoy your puppies!

  28. After hearing a plea on the radio from a shelter with too many dogs, my mother and I and a friend drove 60 miles in our 3 cars to the shelter and then drove away with 25 dogs. You should have seen my father's face when he got home from work! We homed all 25 in less than 2 weeks. They went to friends, family, neighbors, and a few strangers that we checked out before they took one of our charges. The last one adopted was a sweetie that would hide whenever anyone came to look at her. One day a local farmer came and sat in the kitchen just talking to us about his farm. His gentle manner soon drew her out. We knew she was smitten when she put her nose in his hand before he had even touched her. When he was ready to leave, he picked up his hat and asked her if she was ready to go home. She beat him to the door with a wildly wagging tail.
Even though we told everyone who took one of our charges if they had any problems to return the dog to us, we didn't get one returned to us or a shelter. The pairings were perfect for each dog and human parent.

  39. I read every word of this heartwarming post! I'm thrilled for you and for those sweet girls that have found a forever home. We waited over 20 years before getting another dog after loosing our first Lhasa. We would consider the idea off and on, but would eventually decide that our life of travel didn't fit bringing a pet into our lives again. Well, that was until March 2012. My husband suddenly decided that we needed a dog and some rescue dog needed us. We found our sweet Sadie through Wee Rescue. She was shy and trembling the day we met, but once I scooped her into my arms my husband knew she was the one. Her name was Bernice, though we decided to change it to Sadie to fit her sweet personality. Like your experience, it was as if she had been waiting for just the right match. Sweet girl had been in four different homes before coming to live with us. The joy this sweet girl has brought into our lives is beyond measure.
Thanks for sharing your story. I think those dogs who are adopted definitely know that they were chosen to be loved unconditionally.

    1. oh Sarah, I love that you found little Sadie after so many years. I'm guessing you are wondering why you waited so long to love again?!! Hope others will read your story and adopt again. Poor little Louise had been returned once also (after only two months) but that never deterred me as I thought it was because she was supposed to be ours.

We lost 2 within 6 months and I swore I wouldn't get another one but we have two rescued pit bulls that I love with all my heart. I am so glad you adopted two. The love you get from our dogs is the best ever. I hope you all have many, many, many years of love to come.

  57. This is such a wonderful story, and I am so, so happy for Magnolia and Louise! From the pictures, it is obvious that they realize they have arrived in paradise. I am jealous of them, because I too would like to be adopted by you and come to live in your delightful home :) I hope someday to be able to adopt a dog, but for the moment my house is full of adopted cats! I have a fabulous 16 year old, the love of my life, whom I rescued from a shelter as a tiny kitten - and then 7 years ago, a stray mama kitty, really still a kitten herself, had a litter of 6 (!!!) (girl!!!) kittens under a hedge on my property. Of course, they could not stay outside, so Mama and her 6 children moved in for a few months. I found homes with my brother and a friend for 4 of the kittens, and Sweet Mama and 2 of her babies stayed with me for good. The saddest thing was that Mama was obviously used to people and knew about litter boxes, etc., so I have to believe that someone had her as a pet and then dumped her, not even spayed. Who does that??? It wasn't my plan to keep them, because as you say, multiple pets means a whole lot of fur, scratching, and poop, but I have never been sorry. Bless you for giving these lovely dogs a home, and thank you for sharing their story!

  66. Thanks for sharing your doggie rescue story. We have a huge black lab mix that we rescued when he was about 1.5 years old. The poor guy was skin and bones, had a tape worm, had been sprayed by a skunk, etc... He is an absolute doll, and is truly a gentle giant (he's now 120 pounds!). We just adopted our first puppy (also a rescue), so we're all adjusting, but our older dog has been a champ. We've always been a one dog family, but after reading your story, I'm excited to see them grow together.

Your sweet Louise - so glad you found her. These pups really appreciate the second chance they've been given, and we benefit as their owners. :-)

  81. what a beautiful story and life you share with us. We have two rescues after our sweet Sandy died suddenly from a coyote attack . I 've been wanting to adopt a third one but I thought it would be hard if they gang up against the other. Guess the gender also has something to do with it? mine are both male, and i would like to get another male dog, but not sure. It also has to be medium to large in size so I'm not always worried about coyotes that come and go around here. I've found out that dogs shed more when they are stressed or there is a change in their rutines, I worried a lot about this but then i got the best vacuum and comb and there is not a lot to worry about. Thanks again for sharing !!!!

  90. I'm crying my f*****g eyes out! I LOVE this so so so much and I love you and Dan, too. They all look like sisters. I am so touched. It was meant to be. I adopted my dog, Barbie, 2.5 years ago and still can't believe the fulfillment and joy rescuing has brought me. My choice to adopt was a rapid change of heart that occurred after a BBC documentary on the modern practices of breeding. So many light bulbs went off in my head about health problems my purebred yellow lab had. So I went from looking across the country for fluffy white Samoyed breeders to scanning my state for a little black puppy. it was over a year that I searched. I had actually decided I wouldn't get a dog. So one Saturday morning, I needed to research a replacement part for a Pella window. My browser auto completed Pella to Petfinder, as I used to peruse it so frequently. So I went ahead and did my usual search, and there was Barbie's little face. Only seven weeks old. She and her mother and five litter mates were bought from an Amish farm for $20 where they had all been held in the same crate. And then placed in rescue. I'm sure everyone has stories like these, and I just love reading yours. I felt like daddy warbucks bringing her home. I always joke that Barbie doesn't remember life before memory foam mattresses :) okay now I need to go blowdry the tears off my face so the cashier at the grocery doesn't have me committed.

  107. I found 2 brown puppies and an unrelated black dog going through a corn field. Took them home and found homes for the pups. Neighbor is a dog behavior specialist/trainer and we asked her to help find a home for the 1 year old black female. She said it was hard for them to be adopted and that was the case. I had never heard of this and it never occurred to me that the color of their fur was a factor in adoption. Black dog syndrome? Ridiculous human behavior. Although we already had 2 cats and 2 dogs Coco Chanel stayed. Thank you for protecting black dogs!

  111. Wonderful news! It has been a "3 Dog Nite" at my house for going on 10 years. Six years ago when my Border Terrier mix passed on I found a Black Terrier Mix locally on Petfinder and heard about the "Black Dog Syndrone". I thought she was so cute and knew she loved me instantly when she covered me with sloppy kisses. The 2 week trial adoption was nearly sealed that day when she later joined the other 2 dogs for a nap in a heap. Ella probably loves Magnolia and Louise as much as you and Dan do. May you all be blessed with good health and sunny spots for a nap when you please!

    2. As foster mother too I know those "no looking back" scenarios! It makes me happy but still...maybe just a quick glance and a small wave?? Is that too much to ask?? :)

  122. I LOVED your post! We adopted our black lab, Shelby, from a shelter in March. She was a stray and I thought it was so strange when we went to meet/adopt her, the workers were almost trying to talk us out of taking her, saying she was very timid. She was also in the back of her kennel and didn't move. When they let us take her out, we could see a huge difference. She was probably so afraid and confused with all that had happened to her. They hold strays for 10 days, but no one came for her - and we were there as soon as her hold was lifted. There is nothing timid about her now! She has turned out to be the most perfect dog we could have ever asked for - and extremely smart. We've always had black labs, and she has won our hearts as much as our other babies had (we lost our most recent one at almost 15 years old a couple of years ago). We believe Shelby is about 2 years old, and still has a lot of puppy in her...which is why I am still trying to talk my husband in adopting another dog to be her playmate. We'll see! :)

  123. Happy happy post! What a wonderful thing you have done for those two sweet pups. Random tip...but if you are not already ordering chews/treats from Best Bully Sticks dot com, I highly recommend. The prices are soooo much better than local and chain pet stores. My dog enjoys a bully stick most nights after dinner so we order in bulk from that site. You have inspired me to look into adopting a second dog...off to peruse Boykin Spaniel Rescue right now!

  124. With tears streaming down my face, I am so happy for you and the ladies. My heart broke when you posted the sad news in January. This is a happy ending.

  125. I don't know how you are getting anything done. You must be stopping every five minutes to kiss those sweet faces - all three - and tell them how special they are. Bliss to y'all!!

  127. I was so happy when I opened your blog today and saw your fabulous story!! I was so sad when sweet Amelia went so quickly. (but happy she was so very loved) As a rescue/foster family for the last 14+ years I can't tell you how important it is to adopt these babies; especially as you stated the black ones...people just turn away from the black dogs. This is wonderful news!!! Three puppies!!! Three very lucky puppies!!!!

  128. What a sweet, sweet story....and what happy pups and pup parents (then why am I crying!??!? :) )! I wish all pets could live so well. We had/have rescue cats, and I wish I could take care of them all. Thanks for 'highlighting' adoptions of rescues, I look forward to more stories of the sisters! Rosie

  129. ...most people think the term "rescue dog" comes from people rescuing dogs from heart hurting situations...not so...it comes from dogs rescuing people from heart hurting situations...blessings laney

  133. Joan.....A beautiful story...that will only continue to change and grow! Well, YOU know my story, and are intricately involved in it.....as I look down at our new 4 year old Dane, who never even had human touch for most of his life....And whose heart and soul have pulled us in so deeply. We call him Bo (the big black Dane) on installments. The black areas (and frankly all, have the heart and soul of Bo who we loved and loved us to the moon and back. And now, in reading through some comments....YOU are inspiring others to rescue. Rescue whisperer. Thanks, Amelia....your job was SO important on this earth. With LOTSA love and admiration...

  135. A Three Dog Night !!! So fabulous! We have had either two or three dogs over the years and well understand your wish for three. Presently we have two darling black boys! Your mention of the additional 'poopage' prompted me to mention something that you may already know. If you do just ignore my redundancy. About 10 years ago we were dealing with a dog with chronic ear infections. I happened to mention it to the proprietor of a local shop that specializes in dog and cat products, including many food varieties. She immediately asked what the dogs were eating and suggested that I change them to a grain and chicken free diet. It was pure magic!! My senior dog developed a new lease on life and the dog with the chronic ear problems was cured. My reason for going on about this is that the BEST side benefit was that their poops were now much smaller, no awful odor and after a day or so turned white and disintegrated. Pure magic !!
