the guest bath: details

Thank you for all of your comments about the guest bath!!

The wall color is Benjamin Moore's Moonshine OC-56 in Eggshell.  This is a gray with green undertones.  Because the ceiling is very angular in this room (i.e.  where do you start and stop a color) I took the paint up on the ceiling, so the entire room is Moonshine.  The wainscoting, trim and shutters are Benjamin Moore's White Dove in Latex Satin Impervo.

This sink and faucet is the only piece we reused in the whole renovation other than the antique apron tub in the master bath.  The sink is made by Kohler and the faucet is by Delta.  Towel ring from Restoration Hardware.
The beveled mirror is an antique.  I painted the frame about 8 different times!  I was mixing paints trying to get the shade to be somewhere between the wall color and the background green/blue in the shower curtain.    The soap sits in an antique ironstone dish that has aged to a wonderful putty color.

This light fixture and the sconce over the toilet were purchased on ebay from a company that sells old props from all the major movie studios.  I added the shades.  I always wonder if these light fixtures were ever "extras" in some old movie!
Traditional wood shutters are from Horizon Shutters.
The shower curtain is from Target.  Unfortunately, it is discontinued.  At the time I found it I was hunting my fabric sources for fabric to have one custom made.  I happened to stumble upon this one one day and it was perfect!
The floor is 2-inch hexagon cararra marble.   The marble is also the floor in the shower- with white subway tiles on the wall and white 4 x 4" tiles on the ceiling.
To annon who suggested a rug;)... I consider the marble floor to be the major design element in this small space and couldn't possibly cover up such beauty with a rug!  As I do in the master bath, a "bath mat" (similar to an extra thick towel for the floor) is used when someone takes a shower, but is then put away.

Vintage green Chinese ginger jar.  I have a collection of these, but most are a darker shade of green.  This one has the same unusual green/blue that is the background color in the shower curtain, so it was perfect for the room.  In the winter I keep white miniature carnations in the ginger jar, but this summer I have loved the pop of orange from some potted begonias I have on the downstairs porch.

The shower is behind the wall left of the toilet.  The toilet is made by Kohler.  The glass rod towel holder is from Renovation Hardware.  A potted staghorn fern sits on the tank.
The antique oil painting is of our beloved Mount Hood in Oregon.  It's a sweet reminder of our very first apartment which had a breathtaking view of the mountain.
We found the painting unframed, but it just happened to fit an antique frame that we had sitting in a closet... trust me that does not happen often- it's like winning the lottery!

This guest bath is at the top of the stairs and is very visible when you reach the landing.  The door opens out into the landing (you can see the door on the left in the photo.)  A glass shower door (like the one in the master bath) was discussed, but I really wanted the softness of the fabric for the room and the view of pretty fabric instead of glass.  I also didn't want to spend another $1,000 on a glass shower door ;)
When we purchased the farmhouse this bath was slightly larger, but had a lower ceiling.  Instead of the shower the room had a clawfoot tub.  Since we were keeping a tub in the master bath I felt a shower would be more user-friendly for our guests and the tub was given to a fellow blogger who has an antique home in upstate New York!  Removing the tub and replacing it with a shower enabled us to gain a few inches of space in the master bath which sits behind and to the side of this bath.
(For those of you with the magazine it might help to reference the floor plan on the last page of our feature.)

for reference/for Karen ;) the shower walls measure:

18.5" x 46.25" x 34.25" x 30.5" with a door opening of 22.25"

  1. Thanks for sharing all the details. When I first saw your bathroom it really made me smile. It is so similar to the guest bathroom in our basement. I think the sink, flooring, wainscoting and towel bar are all the same. We even painted the walls a green/gray color we mixed ourselves. Love your light fixture as it really adds a special touch. The story behind it is wonderful too!

  7. Bathed in moonshine. Doesn't get better. I love that you painted the ceiling, too. The colors are so soft and ethereal. I love that you bring elements into your bathroom that you don't normally find there - that painting (and you did hit the lottery with the perfect frame hidden away) and the sconce are fabulous in there. (and just fabulous!) Your house is one of my favorites of all time. I don't just love parts of it, I love all of it :)

  18. Your guest bath is beautiful and like you why cover up a gorgeous floor with a rug when a bath mat works perfectly. I had to refer to my RS magazine to see where your bath is located, fun!

  19. All I can say is that I love it, love it, love it. Every time I view one of your newly released rooms I want to redo my entire house. Unfortunately time and money don't afford me the quick turn around I really desire, but I definitely keep these earmarked for inspiration - and your talent is very inspiring!
Thanks again for sharing - and all the details. It helps to know what you're keeping an eye out for. Even when it's as simple as the name of a plant: )

  23. Joan, thank you so much for the details! It is so nice when people don't find sharing details difficult, as though it's theirs and theirs alone! I am off to find my graph paper and sketch out the shower now (even though it's 10:15 pm already! where did the evening go?!) You are such a sweetheart to measure, thank you thank you! gosh, i am soooo behind on my own blog, but I just truly enjoy browsing - and yours is the 1st one I read when there's a new post!

  32. I do love that you put in the details. And the paint colors. I bought one of your paint colors just because it so impressed me in your lovely home and I hope that when I finish my own bedroom reno, that it will look half as good in my space. We've heard it said that "It's all about the details" and that is so true in decorating. I know that a lot of people just put their pretty photos out there and say, "Oh, I found this cute chair and the perfect shade of green..."...But one of my very favorite things about your blog is that you KNOW exactly what you did and how....and why. And what sheen. And what fabric. That's important to those of us who want to know why a room works.
Thank you for your lovely home.

  33. I love that you so generously share the details of your home restoration. I always like hearing "the story" behind each piece. Love your painting and the blue/green ginger jar vase. I'm still enjoying your article in RS and so happy that they mentioned Ella. Hugs to her and have a great weekend.

  34. Joan,
Your guest bathroom is fabulous, like the rest of your home. Love the tile on the floor, stunning.

  35. Simply lovely, Joan! I agree, a prize such as your marble flooring should not be covered! I smiled at your reference to Benjamin Moore's White Dove paint...you'd laugh if you knew how many times I've used that. Most of all, I'm impressed by you painting the mirror frame eight times, but then, it is exactly this attention to detail that makes all the difference and the ambiance seem effortless.

Wonderful to have you back after your summer break!

  37. Oh my - I can't believe someone wanted you to add a rug! That floor is gorgeous!

  38. I love your bathroom.

Anon may wish to know that when you have small tile like hex tile or herringbone patterns, the gout lines are many, providing a non slip surface every inch or couple of inches. Because of this, you don't slip the way you would on a 12" marble tile.

  39. I recently found this post after searching for bathroom flooring I like. I really want to use the carrera tile you mention. Can you give me more specifics on what exactly you used? I found a place online that sells it but there are several options, for example, polished, tumbled or honed? Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you SO much for your reply! It means a lot! Now for more questions. (I hope you don't mind :). What "color" is this? The online source I am looking to get a sample from is carraratiles dot com. I am thinking yours looks like the "Italian White Bianco."

Or do you have a recommendation on where I can order this?

Thanks again! This is such a help!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, ours would be White Bianco. We ordered ours from a local tile shop, but you might try looking on ebay. Good luck!

  41. Since there aren't any pictures of the inside of the shower, I'm just curious...what size subway tile did you use? Is it a bright white? We are planning on using the same type of hexagon marble floor tiles, and were trying to decide between white subway tiles and marble subway tiles in the the shower surround. Love the pictures!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The subway tiles are 3" x 6" and are white, though I wouldn't say bright white, more of a soft white (don't remember the manufacturer, sorry.)

  42. Just beautiful! Do you remember what kind of wainscoting you used or where you found it? I am having a hard time finding the just-right size and beading...and this is it! Haha. :)

    1. hi Natelie, to find this real wood (as opposed to paneling) wainscoting you'll need to go to a lumber yard ( Home Depot or Lowe's don't carry it). Good luck!

  43. Just dropping by after searching your site for the hundredth time. :) Your entire home is the inspiration for our new home which we are in the process of building. I was wondering if you might share the color of grout used in this bathroom and/or in the master shower? I am also using the carrerra marble hex on the shower floor and subway tiles on the walls. I've never had a tiled shower before and wasn't sure on the grout color. Thank you so much for always posting all the little details. Happy 2016!

    1. Becky, I am honored that our house is your inspiration! I do not recall the color of the grout, but do remember it had a tinge of gray to it. It might?? be in the comments of the master bath reveal (the second "detail" post? I remember someone asking about it and I don't know if I had the name then or not. Best of luck with your new home. Please send photos! j.

  44. Hello - I’m just discovering your blog and admire your guest bath. We are about to begin to build a home where we’ll be using a lot of bead board. Will you share what type of bead board you used? Individual wood panels? Sheets? I also noticed it’s use in your kitchen and what look like planks on the ceiling? Will you share those materials too? Thank you - and forgive me for asking so many questions as a newbie visitor! ~ Best, Julie

    1. hi Julie, Welcome to the blog. We used 1 x 6 boards (not sheets) with beading on the front and plain on the backside. They are tongue and groove. The ceiling is simply the beadboard reversed to the back side which is plain. Best of luck with your new home!

  45. Could it be Platinum for the grout color? This happens to be the wall color we are using in our bathroom remodel and we are about to have white hexagon tile put in next week and I've been trying to find bathrooms with the wall color and grout color in either Patinum or Delorean which are the two we are deciding on, I'm not sure which goes better with Moonshine. Beautiful bathroom by the way!
