hi joan,THUD. me hitting floor.xojanet
OMG! That's all...just OMG!
I am incredibly green with envy. Your home is absoultely beautiful. Thank you so much for inspiring me, again. :)
OHHHHHHHHH, your kitchen is amazing. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. I don't know if you have posted many pics of your kitchen but I think I may have missed them. It is gorgeous. When we rennovated our kitchen I did a little similar. I did add more color but I would have loved to have gone all black and white. I tried to talk DH into marble countertops but we compromised on Vermont soapstone and I did Zebra wood on my island. I did all glass front cabinets too and I love them. I also love the fact that you have a fireplace right there in your kitchen. It is FABULOUS!!!!! Can I come visit???Carolyn
Oh I do love this! That's the classiest farmhouse kitchen I've ever seen! I was in awe of the kitchen in the movie "Somethings Gotta Give" and this has some of the same vibe...you have classic taste for sure! I really like the chandelier over the table and chairs, which I adore also! Boy I could just go on and on...I even love the picture hanging on the backside of cupboard door...the light fixtures....5 star rating for sure! You must be so pleased!
I'm in total love...
Hello Joan! This is my dream kitchen. I can honestly say this is one of the nicest kitchens I've ever seen...every bit as nice as you'd see in decorating magazines. This is gorgeous. I love every bit of it. Seeing your farmhouse sink makes me miss mine. You have such wonderful taste...very classy but also very homey too. This is a room I'd love to walk into in the morning...how could you not wake up in a good mood knowing you were going to cook in here! Thank you for sharing your kitchen with us. If homes could talk I think yours would say 'thank you' too! If your kitchen is this beautiful I have no doubt that what you are working on now will be just as lovely. I look forward to seeing the rest as you get it done. I hope you have a wonderful Thursday.Maura :)
Gasp! Oh my goodness Joan it's beautiful. I must ask about the cabinet that has the art hanging on the open door....looove it! Was that an existing cabinet or a new installation? You have the most amazing eye for creating a beautiful space...wow...just wow.
Joan,Are you kidding? We're only one room past the entry and I'm speechless. It's cozy, classic, charming ... ok, stunning!Do you know that most people would give an arm for a brick fireplace in their kitchen?!You have done the most awesome job in this room. I would love to have my morning tea at this table ... I know it's unbecoming to be envious but it's so lovely. You have exquisite taste!I love your rugs...are they old or can I go get them somewhere for my kitchen?I can hardly wait to see the next room. :)
OOOOOH MMMMMM GGGGGGGGEEEEE !!!!
this needs to be published in a glossy mag asap!!!!!!!! it's perfection:)
O-M-G!!! Your kitchen is divine, just stunning! I am so in love.....wish I could move right in! LOL...Think I'll go fix myself a diet Coke in my shoebox kitchen now.....~Des
i agree with name is grace. your kitchen is truely stunning. and as everyone else has said DREAM KITCHEN. seriously you need to submit this to a magazine. thanks for inspiring me to keep going in my own home. JBR @LifeOnLyford.blogspot
So elegant and bright! Lovely. I especially love the parson-style chairs around the table and what you've done with the shelving!
OMG! Joan!!!! This is my absolute DREAM kitchen!! DREAM! I'm gaga over that table. What a beautiful piece of furniture ... the brick, the cabinet, the counters, the stove - that sink! THE SINK!!!!! OMG! Seriously - I've died and gone to heaven! Emailing you ... this is seriously magazine worthy!
OH! AND Btw, where did you get those chairs?
One of the best looking kitchens I have ever seen. Ever. And that includes shelter mags, blogs and in person. Well done, indeed. Your home belongs in a book. Not a magazine, a book!! I am seriously impressed!
Joan, Miss you dear friend! The kitchen is absolutely beautiful. Simply stunning. xoTrina
Utter jealousy. I can't say it any other way. Yur kitchen is bigger than most NYC apartments, and so much more beautiful. What I love the most? The red knobs on the stove that are echoed in the carpet on the floor in front of it. I'm stealing that idea if you don't mind, though I am going to have to find a miniature Viking.
Such absolute style!!! Aaaah. I love that little cupboard that open above the drawers - the one with the calendar in it. Your finishings are timeless. Do enjoy!!!
Ok.....That's it!I'm moving right back into that sub Z. STAT!Move over Ketchup......
Wow, very warm en cozy. Lovely place to be!
Joan, It's wonderful. I like that you have a little bed for Ella next to the island.Kathleen
TO. DIE. FOR.
I would have stayed up later if I knew you were going to post this...but then I wouldn't have been able to sleep! I have to agree with whomever said this is one of the nicest kitchen I have ever seen. I think I've noticed all the details, the different hardware, the beadboard ceiling, the different counter surfaces but at least I know I can back for reference. I love the little skirt under the sink to soften all the cabinetry, the rug. If I had this kitchen, I wouldn't need any other rooms. I would just set up a little bed over by the fireplace and I would never have to leave!
WOW! Ditto to everything stated previously. Yours is the kitchen I would love to have. I adore everything about it. The light over the sink, the cabinet with the door open that has a painting hanging on it, the fridge, the counters, the rugs ... everything is gorgeous. You have lovely taste! Thank you, by the way, for your sweet comment about my beloved dog, Phoebe. My blog is new and I'm thrilled that you visited!Claudia
Joan, how lovely and welcoming it all is. I've been hooked since you posted about your refrigerator. And I just love your white cabinets with all the glass fronts. It must make you so happy and content to walk into this room every day.
Joanie! It is stunning! Wow! I can't wait to go back and look it again. It is better than any magazine I've ever drooled over! Beautiful!!!
You guys are amazing! It is elegance and comfort all in one room! I want to wake up to my coffee brewing in there!!!
I've been a lurker for quite a while now and had to come out of lurkerdom to say "WOW"!!!!! I love everything you have done with the house so far. We just started renovating a 1903 Victorian so you're posts inspire me! Thanks so much for sharing!
WOOOWWW!!! I have sooo been waiting to see pics of your home....well worth it!!! Gorgeous!!!!
Oh my GOSH! I just saw this post!!! Tooooooooo BEAUTIFUL! Not surprised though but still toooooooo BEAUTIFUL!!
Joan! PERFECT!P.S. Daniel found a deer antler shed for me the other day while he was hunting...I was so excited!
Love it! Can you tell me what the black countertop material is? Soapstone, I am guessing. Trying to decide on countertops now so this is very inspirational.Thanks.New Mexico Kitchen
Holy S**T!! I just went through this and was like wow, thats alot of pictures for a spread in a magazine, and then I realized THATS YOUR HOUSE!! OMG, can you please adopt me? I NEED to live in an old New England house with a kitchen like that- I am in L.O.V.E- it is just amazing, beyond amazing actually- I'm coming to live with you to learn from the master, ok?
...love it...love it...love it...perfect...perfect...perfect...
your kitchen is an absolute dream!! love, love, LOVE.
Absolutely gorgeous! I love everything about it just like I knew I would. Thank you so much for sharing! It was worth the wait! Surely this will be in some magazine....right?
Came here from Linda's. You house is just breathtakingly beautiful. Congratulations!! Great choices all around:)
Very beautiful, indeed. Comfortable, elegant and above all practical. The stone fireplace wall is a lovely thing.
Holy cow this is absolutely stunning!!!! Saving for my dream files...hopefully one day I too will have a kitchen as beautiful as yours. ;)Cheers~T
I live in Texas but I totally get New England! And your kitchen? FAB.U.LOUS. Beyond...
joan. there are no words to describe how wonderful your kitchen is. (and you posted it perfectly - all photos and no words)...everything goes together so beautifully, but I think I am most touched by the 'little things' the silver in glass and ironstone containers on the table; the skirted sink; the dog bed; the very worn oriental; glass, ironstone, silver and bamboo-handled ware on display. so warm and beautiful. just like you...thank you so much for letting us into your home. donna
This is breathtaking, Joan! I love the ceilings-- can you elaborate on what you did there? The breakfast area/fireplace is divine, too. So much to love...
The warmth your kitchen exudes is amazing. Looks like the most lovely Vermont inn. I would love to dine by the fire in your kitchen. Where did you get Ella's bed?
I realy love your kitchen!Kind Regards from Holland,Jeanette
Dear Joanie and Dan,Just unbelievably beautiful!!!! The barn renovation looks great. Ya'll have done such an amazing job, and I know how much fun you are having! So proud of you, little sis.xox,p.
Joan this is definitely an inspiration! The first room we will be reviving is our kitchen -we start tomorrow afternoon, right after we sign our closing papers on the house. If ours turns out half as beautiful as yours it will show our new old house the love it has been missing. Katie
Joan, I look at a lot of magazines and clearly this kitchen is one of the very best I have seen. I love it all. The brick in the fireplace has wonderful shades which works so well with your wood floors, the painted cabinets, hardware, and chandelier. By the way, the chandelier is amazing - I'm sure it is an antique. I love the dark wood round table which contrasts so beautifully with the white slip covered chairs. The bead board ceiling is great especially since you omitted all the can lights. I love the countertops - are the honed granite? I also love all the green plants with all the neutrals. You had a wonderful little lamp on the counter as well. I recently added a small light fixture in my kitchen and cannot believe how the light from this small fixture makes such a warm glow that can lights could never do. I am going to use some of your ideas when we move and I renovate our kitchen. With all the cloudy days and cold snowy weather, I would be in your kitchen sitting at that table with a cup of tea and a beautiful fire in that amazing fireplace. GREAT JOB! I noticed on Eddie Ross's blog that he will help others get published - you should contact him. I have spoken with him before and he is so nice, energetic, and enthusiastic.
Holy Moly! Its stunning! I have been back to look at the pictures 3 times today and my jaw is still on the floor. I remember when you posted that you found the table. It looks incredible...with the brick fireplace and the slipcovered chairs (where did you get those by the way?) Yall have impeccable taste.Cali
Oh, it's so beautiful I could cry. Just perfect. Perfect!Could you share the color of the white paint you used on the cupboards? I am repainting mine soon, and I just love the way yours turned out. I love Ella's bed!So inspired,Melissa
Absolutely beautiful! Every single detail and every single personal touch are so special, and so perfect....'well done' doesn't even cover it. xo J~
Beautiful kitchen Joan, wish I had a dining area that size in mine then I could get rid of my seperate dining room. I love how you even made room for Ella too, Dylan has a mat in here beside the island as well.
Wow!. All I can say is WOW. There are so many great elements here combined to make a truly stunning room with personality and charm!
Oh Joan, I'm not at all surprised by the gorgeousness of your images, I have come to expect nothing less of you! This is not only a stunning kitchen aesthetically, but I reckon it works a treat on a practical level as well. Absolutely, the loveliest post of the year. MOTH's been peering over my shoulder & has just said "Tell Joan & Dan to put the kettle on, we're on our way!"Millie x
I LOVE your home, can I please please have it, promise I won't tell anyone. OK that's a lie I would tell everyone... it is a home worthy of sharing. So Thank you for sharing and inspiring, I'm sure my hubby won't agree but I LOVE it!
Oh, hi. You caught me sneaking back for another look. I really starting to dig antlers. I bought some for the guest bedroom. I know I'm probably going to get a lecture from Janet. But I like them. I want a whole huge vase of them on my dining room table. What's the paint color on the walls?
Did you hear that, did you see that? All the chaos was caused by me jumping up and down and squealing with delight, I have waited so long to see your kitchen and it does not disappoint. It is ????? there are no words to describe how perfect it is! Your home should be featured in a magazine! Love all of it!
and I want to add to the comment from Urban Cottage about living in the kitchen, all that would be needed would be a bed by the fireplace, well I would move Ella's bed there and that would be all I need!
Joan- I'm calling my editor!!!!!Well, if I had an editor, I'd have dialed the number before the 3rd picture....instead, I'm telling my friend Sallie to get herself to your blog QUICK!!I love it- I'm going to try and find an editor!Hugs-Carolyn
Joan, thank you so much for that very nice comment. I had to stop over here & visit & my jaw is hitting the floor. Oh my gosh, that is YOUR kitchen & I thought it had to be a magazine. Wow, I'm speechless, what a wonderful kitchen, it is perfection. I'd love to feature you on my Feature Friday if you would allow me to show it off. Please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks so much for stopping by.
Kerplunk! Me on the floor after seeing this kitchen. It is drool worthy. You must contact Eddie and have it published.
There would seem to be nothing left to say after all of the adoration. But I allow me to add you have definitely given this home a soul with this kitchen. I often ask my clients what feeling they want to evoke in a space. The beauty that dwells here through your efforts speaks volumes of love and dedication and artistry. I applaud your style madam.
How beautiful and inviting!I especially love to see your treasured finds restored and in place. Such as the wooden light fixture over the table. Just lovely!
I agree with all of the above comments. Your home needs to be published. Better yet, you need to write a book about your home! It's magical. xoBrooke
Joan, Dan, and Ella: Perfection. There is so much to say, but I have no words. Cindy
hi joan, like sarah and steve i'm back for my umpteenth look. each time i look i see something new. and tell steve janet approves of shed antlers. nevermind i'll tell him myself.xojanet
Hello, just found you from lime in the coconut and so very glad I did!! I am just starting to read all of your previous posts and loving every minute of it (I am from new england & yes it is 3:00 a.m.) Your home and the work you put into it is truly amazing. I will definitely be back - amazing, simply amazing!!
Dear Joan,Where have I been? First I want to thank you so much for your comment on my blog. I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by.Second, I look forward to following along on your journey. I'm only at your first post here and just had to stop & comment. I've been taking in every detail, from the antlers in the cabinet to the little lamp in the corner, but what told me tons about you was Ella's nest! I'm sure she loves you just as much as you all love her. Your journey has taken you far from Dallas in many ways! We made a similar move from L.A. To Ky. nine years ago with kids in tow. It's a gift when dreams are realized!I'm off to read more now...Happy weekend!Lisa
Like the rest of the 70 commenters on this post, I am just scraping myself up off the floor ..:-) To Die For Joan.. The fireplace is perfection. Vie
Your kitchen is so beautiful - I love the combination of the dark counters and the veined marble - spectacular! I would love to read your thought process on choosing cabinet hardware - one of my next tasks! It is a bit early, but I always like to be several steps ahead.
Love the kitchen, we are a New Holland dealer and I would be glad to deliver parts for Big Blue right to your kitchen door. I guess it would take me awhile from Virginia to get them there but what a treat it would be to see your kitchen in real life.
Hi Joan - Your kitchen is not only beautiful, but also cozy and inviting! Thanks for sharing the photos with us. Have a great weekend.Deborah
Now Joan, You know Jeff would make Zoyla have a totally organized refrigerator, not Just the front! I'm with your plan. Organized chaos over insanity.
The good news is - that your kitchen is basically my dream kitchen. So this whole "when we are ready to buy, you'll be ready to sell" is looking like an excellent master plan. I Looooooooooove your/my future kitchen!!!
Joan this is everything to LOVE about your kitchen & nothing to not. I found you through Linda @ lime and so glad I did. Have a lovely weekend ~ Deb

Honestly one of the prettiest kitchens I’ve ever seen in any book or magazine. The fireplace is amazing. I bet you all cozy up around that table and have great conversations and coffee. Love that cabinet door open too--perfect.
Wonderful ! I can stop looking further for Kitchen inspiration for my next home. You did it all in yours :)
I'm very happy to have come across your blog. I've been trying for nearly 8 years to convince my husband that white cabinets would be a good change in our kitchen, but he has clung to the dark wood. I showed him the photos of your kitchen, which looks to be about the size of ours, and he agreed that it would be a good look here - hurrah and thanks!!I'll be your newest follower.
Well...that is a "ta da" kitchen if I have ever seen one!! Ditto all of the comments above and double them!!! I am in awe.........
2nd time around...I had to come back and enlarge every picture and study them! Time for you to put together a book about this farmhouse renovation...I'm confident you will draw a lot of attention with it! Love the french wire basket with the potted plants on the island too...great great great!
What a gorgeous kitchen...adore the fireplace!!
Thank you for your nice comments! I LOVE that antique shop in Wells, Art was really nice, he was someone I felt totally comfortable with immediately. I also wanted every single thing in his shop. Good thing we had Cheddar with us and some friends or I would have filled our wagon up with no hesitation. We did have our "new" soapstone sink and two faux bois planters delivered last week from him. I did not get that lantern, my husband reminded me that we already have one very similar, an old gas lamp, that I got at auction in VT and had rewired hanging in our kitchen now. Can't wait to read about your kitchen! It is perfection!!! I am sure Cheddar and your pups would get along famously, as would we! Maybe you can come sailing on our boat this spring when we get her out of the shed (she is in S. Berwick) she had heat!Cheers!
Joan look at this response ! You are so truly inspiring! Fabulous beyond!Come and join my Gorgeous Giveaway from Blydesign!xoxoKarenaArt by Karena

I am going to pretty much gut my entire space and am in the planning process of where to put what. If you have time, will you please tell me what your counter top depth is around the sink? Is it standard 24" or less. Thank you,Patty

Oh my....be still, my heart! I think I just fell in love. I was driven here by the "Hooked on Houses" blog and now I have two favorites! Can't wait till I have more time to explore.-tracie
I am drooling over your kitchen and breakfast area. As for those dreamy IKEA slipcovered armchairs, I know you said they are Henriksdal chairs, but are the slipcovers on them the white ones from IKEA too? Or do you have custom slipcovers on them? They are beautiful!
Thank you! Yes, they are the white ones from Ikea. I bought extra slips thinking I would have them deconstructed to use as a pattern for custom ones, but I have been so pleased with the Ikea slips that I haven't had custom made. They are very well made and wash beautifully.
bsurround- So sorry- I accidentally deleted your comment, so I hope this is where you asked the question regarding the windows. I haven't mentioned the name of the company on the blog because I didn't want to give them any press. I do NOT recommend them. Our b.a.d. contractor talked us into using Lepage Windwows and I would never use them again. They were very expensive, the quality is poor and the company was unpleasant, to say the least, to work with. We used Marvin window in the barn and we are VERY happy with them.
Sorry if this has been asked before, I did skim through & I didn't see it. You said you found the replica drawer pulls like the ones on the built in. They were brass & you painted them black matte, but you did not saw where you found them. I'd like to purchase some so I wanted to know where you got them? I know you said you got the 2 iron handles at RH, but didn't know if you got the cute drawer pulls from RH also. I love the fancy curves on them it gives a cute flair compared to normal pulls. I found you through Gracious Spacious, you're kitchen is probably my all time favorite!:)

Hi Joan,So glad that Linda knew my favorite kitchen was your kitchen! I am in the middle of a complete beach house renovation and was questioning whether I should mix the marble and the soapstone. You did it PERFECT! Your kitchen and home are perfection.Vikki
I have looked at your blog so many times! Your home truly is one of my favorites! We are renovating and I have gone with gray owl walls and dove white trim. It is time to paint the new cabinets and I have a few questions for you. I think I will continue on with dw for the cabinets. Big hold up on whether to go with a glazed look, or just a nice simple white cabinet. There is no glaze process in your cabinets is there? I think I have decided against a glaze treatment for fear it will be out of style soon? I think the plain white will be more of a timeless look. thanks for your reply :)
hi anon- No, my cabinets are not glazed or lacquered. Unless you are doing a faux treatment of some kind I would NOT do a glaze. I always veer towards the "classic" as (like you mentioned) there is no fear that it will look dated within a year or two. I highly recommend simply painting. I used Benjamin Moore's Latex Satin Impervo and have been extremely happy with the product. In 4 years now of heavy use I don't have any chips on the cabinets. Best of luck with your renovation!
May I have your house, please? Thanks ever so much!
Why, of course Mandy! Send me your address and I'll send the keys;);)
Would you mind if I ask you a couple of questions about your range? Do you LOVE the Wolf (translation: is it worth it?)? I would be going with a 36", so the options are 6 burners, 4 burners with a griddle, or 4 burners with a charbroiler. I lean toward 6 burners since I've never had the other two options available and wonder if I'd really use them. I can't tell if you have the griddle or charbroiler, but just curious if you find it actually useful, or if you tend to just set other pans on the cover sort of like extra counter space. I do cook A LOT, but we all get into the habit of doing things the way we have always done them, and I want to choose the most useful option. I wonder if one can "grill" indoors using the charbroiler in the wintertime. If so, I probably would do that. ;) Thanks so much for any tips and advice!
hi Heather, I do love the Wolf, and for me it was worth it. I have the griddle. Like you, I was thinking I could grill indoors with during the winter and was going with the charbroiler up until the last minute when I realized what a mess that would be indoors! The smell, the splatter, the grease (from meats), etc. I really like and enjoy having the griddle- think panckaes, paninis, grilled cheese, french toast, eggs etc. You can cook flattened hamburgers/chicken, bacon, sausages etc. on it also, but I haven't done that yet. I would think about how much you'd really use the griddle. If I were getting the 36" it would be a difficult decision to go all burners or the griddle, that's how much I like it. Good luck!
Beautiful and inspiring!
Good Morning! Your kitchen is amazing! We are about to remodel our kitchen as well and I have a question about your wine/beverage fridge in your island. I noticed that the door looks like it matches your cabinets and was wondering how you achieved that. My husband is wanting to add a beverage fridge to our kitchen but I've been fighting it because of the aesthetics of it. If it looked like yours I would totally do it!!! Thank you for any information you can give me!
Thank you Angela. The custom panel for the wine frig door was made by our cabinet maker. I purchased a fridge that required a custom panel and one that didn't come with its own hardware, so that I could match both those elements to the island. Mine is made by KitchenAid http://www.lowes.com/pd_270449-46-KUWO24LSBX_0__?productId=1077141&cm_mmc=SCE_PLA-_-Appliances-_-BeverageCentersWineChillers-_-1077141&CAWELAID=1023794109&kpid=1077141&CAGPSPN=pla&%22cagpspn=pla%22Subzero also makes one that can be customized for your kitchen. Good luck with your remodel!
You've created such a beautiful home. I've really enjoyed viewing all of your pictures and reading along. I'm hoping you'll entertain a question so long after this post. I'm trying to create a similar look for a kitchen island. Would you share the dimensions of the island overall and the depth of the cabinets within the island? I'm sorry if I missed where you provided this information earlier.
Meredith, I have written about this- it is probably in the kitchen "details" post comments. To find the details post click on HERE in the very last sentence of this post ^.The island is 3 x 7'. (The marble is larger.) The depths of the drawers/ cabinets of the island vary from side to side. This post might help... http://fortheloveofahouse.blogspot.com/2013/02/kitchen-drawers.html
We are about to do a kitchen remodel and i stumbled upon your gorgeous kitchen on pinterest. Can I ask what material your backsplash is? Is that tile, or wood? If its wood, how is it holding up?
It is wood and has held up perfectly. To read all the "details" about the kitchen you can click on HERE in the very last sentence of this post ^
Thank you so much for the reply! Very helpful!
Hello! Love seeing your home. Do you know what the name of the shade of white that your kitchen cabinets are? I
If you look under the last photo in this post you can find a link to take you to all the "details" about this space.
I have white dove cabinets and black soapstone as well on my perimeter. I am searching for my island marble. I have seen the bianco venationo and it appears to be too white for the white dove cabinets. Are you finding the same in your home?
As you can see in the photos I don't think my marble is too white for the cabinets. Being a natural product all slabs are going to vary depending on where the were quarried. Be sure to look at the slabs you are interested in in natural light (as opposed to inside a warehouse with fluorescent lighting). Have the slab forklifted to natural light if needed, to really see it.
Welcome to our house! We love reading your comments, so thank you for leaving one! Also, "thank you" for using my AMAZON links on the sidebar to do your shopping! :)
