Happy Two Thousand Fourteen!

Our recent snow seems to be the perfect backdrop for a brand new year.... a fresh start, a new beginning.  At present we are at 6 inches and counting

Along our walk today.
It was 5 degrees with a wind chill of minus 9;)
Ella chose to stay home!

Wishing you a magical new year filled with good health, joy and love!

Hi Joan,

I think I might just be the first comment for the new year!! Your walk today looked like it must have been magical. There is nothing like a snow covered walk in the woods! We are gearing up for some snow here in Connecticut. Brian and my son just brought wood in from behind the garage so we're all set for a fire. Ruth is the lucky one...she left for Florida yesterday!!

Happy 2014 to you, Dan and Ella!

It's truly magical, so still and quiet. Ella is a smart dog to stay home from that morning walk - know where I would have been...

Brrr. Beautiful, though. It's lightly snowing but blowing and howling like a banshee here on top of the mountain. We won't be getting the snow you will. Stay warm! I think Ella has the right idea.

Oh, I am with Ella! I could not bear that cold. It is snowing here (in Pa.) right now but we won't get much. It is beautiful though, I always think snow is magical!!!

Beautiful snow and scenery, Joan. I think Ella is the smart one. We had to put down our nearly 15 year old Springer Spaniel this past Sunday. Our sweet Angel was such a constant part of our lives, and it's quite difficult to ring in 2014 without her. But we are looking forward to better times and wishing you the best year ever :)

Happy New Year, Joan! Such beautiful pictures. It is coming down so hard here, and I am not loving the drop in temps. I'm with Ella. ;-) I wish you nothing but happiness, health, and great antique finds for 2014. (My embroiderer is back to work on Monday...)

Looks beautiful! We are enjoying staying home, safe and warm, while we watch the snow fall outside. My Saint Bernards are thoroughly thrilled though, they love to roll around in the snow. Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!!

I know I should be grateful for our beautiful 76deg weather here in so.cal. but I REALLY want to live somewhere with weather one day! I am grateful to live vicariously through you guys, lol!

I saw this home at Hooked on Houses, and thought you enjoy a virtual house crashing. I think this home is a close second after your home for my dream house fantasy :-)

Your pictures are always magical, any time of year! We are buried under the snow here in the upper Midwest as well. I think it finally stopped this afternoon. Very pretty!

Wishing you and yours a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!!

Joan,
I'm with your other So. Cal reader, I guess deep down I appreciate our warm weather but this time of year I see pictures such as these and can think of nothing better than looking out the window at snow covered trees.

You know, Ella and I would get along very well. I'm not a lover of the cold either.

The pictures of your property with the snow are beautiful and despite the frigid temps I'm sure it was worth the venture out.

Love the pictures, beautiful to look at. Since I am a native So. Cal girl they make me shiver, in fact I cannot wait until spring comes, and we have been having lovely weather. I think I should have been a bear and hibernated until the trees get leaves. I see that Karen W. and Karen, both living here miss the cold weather…boy not me. Bravo for you to take a walk in 5 degree weather...I'm impressed . Always happy to see a new post as I love your site. Happy, happy new year, may this be the best one yet.

Happy 2014 to you also. Love seeing the snowy trees! It is a beautiful picture! One I would love to have hanging in my home. NOt sure I would love living with all the snow, but it is a dream. Don't blog, but yours is one of the few I follow! Thanks for sharing your home!

Hi! I've been following you for a couple of years. Just love watching all the progress you have made on your beautiful home. After 16 years in Texas, I, too, find myself on the east coast. We bought an old colonial and moved in last week. We were suppose to start the renovations today, but the weather had better ideas. You are my inspiration. Happy New Year.

Wishing you a wonderful 2014! Your pictures are beautiful. We're cold here in northern Michigan (5 deg.), but not quite as cold as you guys. I like winter best when it's between 25 and 30 deg.! I hope this deep freeze moves off soon. We've had a very early start to winter here with a total of 89 inches of snow that has fallen since late October. Of course a bunch of it melted but still it's been a very busy start to winter for us!

It is beautiful, but it looks very very cold!! Hope that you stay safe and warm. xx

Happy New Year to you, too! (I think Ella has the right idea).

Beautiful photography, Joan! Do not blame Ella one bit as currently in our area, we have had a total accumulation of 88.1102" of snow with plummeting temperatures on top of it. It is being reported that it is actually warmer at the South Pole right now, than it is here .... BUT .... the good news is we are suppose to be getting a break as temps are to warm up within the next few days which means (you guessed it) .... more snow ... LOL! -Brenda-

Hope to follow suit and take a walk in our lovely frigid temps, as well!

-36 here last night and hovering around - 25 this morning. I won't even add in the windchill factor.
Beautiful images though, I love the snow just not the extreme temps.

HI Joan:
Great pictures. I'm fortunate enough to have the same here when I look out all my windows. A good snow always brings such peace, although we did not get the snowfall totals here in Burlington that happened in your area and south. So, I'm a tad jealous. Temps are pretty frigid though! Happy New Year to you, Dan, and Ella.

Happy New Year..do you walk in snowshoes ? Beautiful photos, my favorite would be the metal orb, my husband is using the snow plow even as we speak ( 8 inches here). My job is front steps and side porch for the silly cat, who love to sit on the porch and watch the birds at the feeders. My older cat just watches from the window. Stay warm.

Happy New Year!!! I am happy to report that we got three inches down here in Virginia, I am a happy girl right now. My daughter up in Connecticut has about 6, and her husband is as happy as can be cleaning everyone's driveways. Have fun in the snow and stay warm!!!

I hadn't seen snow in years when we moved here .. after living in various states then in Argentina, snow was a vague memory.
So far, today, I was able to walk/slide to the mailbox in about 6 inches of new snow and slid out the door to meet the UPS man this afternoon.
It is pretty when you watch it fall , with someone there with you.
I am now worried that I will fall and they won't find me til Spring lol
Happy New Year ! See you in the Spring.

Joan, I adore your home and your fabulous style. I think you have the most impeccable taste and you photograph it so beautifully! I am reorganizing my home office/library and came to your blog for a little inspiration. I am wondering how you camoflage and organize mundane office things like paperwork, files and gadgetry. I love your kitchen drawer posts and your favorite 'house things' posts and I am wondering if you possibly would do an office type post? Just a thought, but it's something I would love to see! I just am so inspired by your creative house ideas and am amazed at the things I've learned from you (toilet shims, brilliant!). I do want to thank you for your wonderful blog, and for the time and work it must take to share it with your readers. I have really learned so much from you and wish I could thank you in a more personal way. Thank you so much, and I thank Dan and Ella too. I hope you all are having a lovely New Year!
